Drive capacity

I need help with a hard drive I picked up for my daughters computer it is a seagate barricuda 80GB it is only showing about 30GB . how can I recover the rest of the drive. should I use Fdisk? tried using xp installation disk and seatools but it will not enable the full capacity of the drive. this is driving me nuts. HELP!!!!

Is this a PATA drive?

I'm guessing there's a jumper at the back of the hard disk, that needs to be removed:

Yes the jumper is on master. do I need to format?

Strange. Have to tried connecting the hard disk to another PC? Just to check if this is system specific.

I loaded it up to my computer. And went into disk management and it said that there is 31.79 GB in unallocated disk space. it doesnt show any other partion on the drive. can it be the mbr. corrupt?

Strange, can you share your system specs? computer make/model?
This being a new drive, should entitle you to a new replacement drive.

The system I am trying to put it on had an xp operating system on it. And I thought that by reinstalling xp in a new install would erase what was there. but all it did was to put it on one of the partitions. so I tried to delete the new opereating system because I was getting a dual boot. well after messing with it and deleting the one partition. and making a mess of things all I ended up with is the one. the computer is a 1.4 pentium 4 machine with an intel motherboard. ati radeon 9600graphics card. about 800 mb of ram. hope this helps.

You say Seatools will not enable the full drive size - does it test the drive as OK?

It may be that the drive has been clipped ex-factory - maybe as a refurb? As ReviverSoft enquires, is it supposedly a new unit? I haven't seen a brand new 80G drive available for quite a while now.

There is drive analysis software ike MHDD that can reveal if a drive is clipped, but it's not very user friendly.
