BleepingComputer.com: Upgrading Memory - HP Pavillion 533mhz

Hello All:

I have been attempting to upgrade the RAM Memory in a HP Pavillion, 533mhz - Celeron Desktop PC.

Here is the breakdown:

1. It has two(2) 64mb SDRAM memory chips (100mhz CL2) - (...These chips have two(2) notches in them...)
2. Replaced it with a Crucial 512MB SDRAM PC133 UDIMM 168pin from Office Max.
3. On the nomenclature of the Crucial, the first three(3) characters were 64m.
4. On the old 64mb chips, the first two(2) characters were 8m.

Now, when I inserted the new memory chip and fired up the PC, I got a series of "beeps" and then a message that the monitor
was not receiving any input signal.

I replaced the "old" memory chips and the PC booted up just fine.

Question of the Day:
Is the fact that the "old" chips are 100mhz CL2's and the "new" chip is a "yada-yada-yada - please see above", causing the PC to think it
does not have any RAM the issue here...???

Question of the Day - Part Deux:
What are my options to increasing the memory...??? (... I only have two(2) memory slots to work with...)

Please help as I am at a lost to what to do at this point.

What model HP?

What made you buy the memory you chose to purchase?

The model of the HP Pavillion is:==> 8650C

Since I only have two(2) slots, I wanted to put as much memory as possible. And thats the ONLY
memory chip that they (Office Max) had that I thought, per the sales person, would work.

Nothing wrong with the RAM module.

The problem is the antiquated motherboard, which only supports a max of 256MB of RAM.

The problem with technological progress (not for me, for some users) is that today's products may be able to work in tomorrow's systems...but, often the technology is just so far ahead of what-used-to-be that the only direction for compatibility...is forward.

Big changes have occurred since the days of 533MHz systems, all of which benefit users. Those were the "good old days" only in comparison to what had preceded them..just as today's systems will be the "good old days" within 2-5 years.

As mentioned above, your motherboard supports a maximum of 256MB (system memory), so you could replace the existing RAM modules with two of these : Mushkin 128MB PC100.
It should marginally improve your system's performance.
