BleepingComputer.com: Problems After XP Recovery

Hi

What a way to start the new year, anyhow straight to the point.

I had to do a recovery as my windows seemed to be corrupted and missing files etc. I did the recovery and when the computer boots it loads to a screen to supposedly help me install my new copy of windows! Problem is the mouse and the keyboard do not work and I cannot get passed this screen. The mouse I am using is a logitech and I have tried swapping USB ports and have tried another logitech mouse no good. The keyboard is a HP wireless keyboard and have tried to press the connect button on both the keyboard and the remote thingy plugged into the comp via USB still nothing.


My system is:

HP Media Centre
XP Media Centre Edition 2002 SP3


Hoping someone can give me some tips on what I can try next.

Try a PS2 mouse and keyboard. Often times the USB ones are not recognized

What is a ps2 mouse? I would prefer not to have to buy something that I am only going to have to use once.

Found out what the PS2 mouse is, I have an USB - PS2 adapter that I have tried and still nothing.

Can you borrow a Mouse and Keyboard that use PS2 connectors? Your USB Drivers could be shot, and need replacing, Mate, trying the others will tell you for sure.

PS2 is a Back up for Mouse and Keyboards.

On older Machines Mouse could also plug into Com Ports.

In XP there is an Option to have an onboard Keyboard, and Mouse can be controlled by the Keyboard.

BTW, why did you need to Repair Windows?

BIOS Settings?

I assume that you are using the wireless mouse and keyboard. A possible problem is in USB legacy support. Make sure that USB legacy support is disabled in BIOS settings. Worth a try...

I have managed to borrow a keyboard and mouse with a PS2 connection. The keyboard now works. However the mouse is still a problem. Whether pluged in via PS2 or USB it still does not operate. I have installed the drivers that came with the mouse and still nothing. When I startup the computer I am overcome by the amount of 'New Hardware Detected' messages, one of these is for the mouse and while it trys to install it wants the location of a file called mouhid.sys I believe this file is supposed to be in the Windows\driver folder or similar it isn't, I have done a search of the computer and it cannot locate this file. At the moment I am trying to remember all the short cut keys for the keyboard and the TAB button has become my favourite friend, but it is very annoying as you would understand.

Any ideas on how I can get this mouhid.sys file???????
