Is it possible to install a legit version of XP Pro on a new 64 bit Dell computer that came with Windows 7 installed?

You ought to be able to: I have XP installed on a 64-bit CPU with no worries.

What may mess it all up, though, are the hard disk controller drivers. XP's install disc won't recognize some controllers used in newer computers without having the drivers loaded from a floppy disk or slip-streamed onto the installation CD.

XP's installer comes with a ton of generic drivers, but it was made almost a decade ago when PATA controllers were still the norm. Now that SATA is taking over, the poor installer doesn't know what to do sometimes.

Compounding the problem is that many manufacturers no longer offer XP drivers for off-the-shelf systems that came preloaded with a newer version of Windows. It may take some detective work, some trial and error, and perhaps a stack of used CD's to get there. but then again, sometimes everything just goes swimmingly.

Perfectly alright, as long as you can get WinXP drivers for your hardware.

I would use separate hard drives for each.
