You cannot start Internet Explorer 7
(IE7) because it flashes the screen when you try and then disappears. This usually happens after installation.
1. Click START–>RUN and type cmd
2. At the prompt, type cd and press ENTER
3. Type cd Program Files and press ENTER4. Type cd Internet Explorer and press ENTER
5. Type regsvr32 IEPROXY.DLL
6. You should get a confirmation that the IEPROXY.DLL has been registered. You can then close all windows and try Internet Explorer again.
Don't know if this will be of any help.
elise025 maybe you could give an opinion before it is used.

elise025. Don't go mad with me but I've probably messed everything up now. I couldn't find SP3 in Add/Remove but I did find it in Revo. I uninstalled it (I think) from there. But by this time I had forgotten about your CD burning thing.
danjmilos, yes IE8 is in Add/Remove. Also I think I will take your advice and wait and see if elise025 thinks it's worth trying (if she's still speaking to me)! Looks promising though.
Oh yes and after all this everything is still the same whether I use the IE icon or the IE No Add-ons. It still flashes up then is gone in about 2 seconds. Very frustrating.

danjmilos, I bit the bullet and tried what you suggested (after creating a restore point) but I cant get passed step 3. I've tried missing spaces, losing the upper case characters, but it wont accept the command. Thanks anyway though.

Sorry! Queen-Evie may just be right. Never done it myself but there are many good people here that will keep the lifeline pulled taunt so you won't sink. Tried looking some more could not find anything else,my brainfarts are having a definite odor of decay now.

There is a thread just starting in the XP operating section from Mickinplymouth about redoing an OS, follow it and then you may decide to do it.

Many computers have it preinstalled but come with recovery discs or a recovery partition or if you know some one with an XP disc that is the same as originally installed, in my case XP Media Center SP2 they can be used because you still will have an OEM license to re-register with.

What do you see listed under Hard Disk Drives?
Obviously you'll see Local Disk C. If there is another one, and you did not install a secondary drive, it will be your recovery partition, which is used instead of recovery disks.

When I purchased this computer I did make some recovery disks from a prompt, but never knew what to do with them!!
So if everything is as it should be, and I get an external drive(?) do you think I should give it a go?

You should be given an option to either repair or do a full format.
An external drive is a good choice for backing up your files and folders.
As I stated, a repair-in theory-leaves them intact, but we know computers sometimes have a mind of their own, so backing up is a "just in case" measure.
And the bonus is you can use the external drive to back up to on a regular basis, so you'll have everything if your hard drive ever dies and has to be replaced.
