Found this at technipages. com:

You cannot start Internet Explorer 7
(IE7) because it flashes the screen when you try and then disappears. This usually happens after installation.

1. Click START–>RUN and type cmd

2. At the prompt, type cd and press ENTER

3. Type cd Program Files and press ENTER4. Type cd Internet Explorer and press ENTER

5. Type regsvr32 IEPROXY.DLL

6. You should get a confirmation that the IEPROXY.DLL has been registered. You can then close all windows and try Internet Explorer again.

Don't know if this will be of any help.
elise025 maybe you could give an opinion before it is used.

Queen-Evie,yes I installed SP3 myself a while ago. Checking 'Show Updates' in Add/Remove I can see IE8 and all the software updates, the last of which was on the 30th December. The only SP's I can see in there are MSXML 4.0 SP2 and there are 4 of them, but read on.

elise025. Don't go mad with me but I've probably messed everything up now. I couldn't find SP3 in Add/Remove but I did find it in Revo. I uninstalled it (I think) from there. But by this time I had forgotten about your CD burning thing. :flowers: Anyway while trying to un-install it a window popped up saying something like, 'it could not be un-installed'. I clicked ok and Revo completed the un-installation. I re-booted and looked in 'Windows Version'. It is 5.1 with SP3. My downloads are set to to 'Automatic' so I'm not sure if it un-installed ok and re-installed when I re-booted or if it didn't un-install at all.

danjmilos, yes IE8 is in Add/Remove. Also I think I will take your advice and wait and see if elise025 thinks it's worth trying (if she's still speaking to me)! Looks promising though.

Oh yes and after all this everything is still the same whether I use the IE icon or the IE No Add-ons. It still flashes up then is gone in about 2 seconds. Very frustrating.

You might need to consider doing a REPAIR install of Windows. Sometimes the amount of time troubleshooting is way more than a repair or re-install.
IF you decide to use this option, and have never done it before, let us know and we can give you all our handy-dandy hints and advice BEFORE you proceed.

Whoa Queen-Evie, a repair, an install, gulp! Too much for me I think. As I said in my first post, I don't use IE much. I would just like to know it's there, just in case, plus I would like to know how/why it disappeared! Having said that, I will keep it in mind.

danjmilos, I bit the bullet and tried what you suggested (after creating a restore point) but I cant get passed step 3. I've tried missing spaces, losing the upper case characters, but it wont accept the command. Thanks anyway though.

peem,

Sorry! Queen-Evie may just be right. Never done it myself but there are many good people here that will keep the lifeline pulled taunt so you won't sink. Tried looking some more could not find anything else,my brainfarts are having a definite odor of decay now.

danjmilos, I've been giving it some thought over the last couple of days, but honestly I don't have the confidence. If it bothers me or gets worse or something then maybe I can open this thread again and ask for help to do it.
What do you think?
In the meantime I would like to thank everyone who has given me their time.

peem,

There is a thread just starting in the XP operating section from Mickinplymouth about redoing an OS, follow it and then you may decide to do it.

Thank you I will keep an eye on it although I think I'm doomed, as from what is being said I will need the XP disc. This computer came with XP pre-installed. Nevertheless it will be interesting.

peem,

Many computers have it preinstalled but come with recovery discs or a recovery partition or if you know some one with an XP disc that is the same as originally installed, in my case XP Media Center SP2 they can be used because you still will have an OEM license to re-register with.

Open My Computer from your desktop.

What do you see listed under Hard Disk Drives?

Obviously you'll see Local Disk C. If there is another one, and you did not install a secondary drive, it will be your recovery partition, which is used instead of recovery disks.

Well I'm still in scairdey-cat (don't know how to spell that) mode but I looked in 'My Computer' and I have, among other things, these items. My (C:)drive,a _RP(D:),a CD Drive(E:), a Removable Didk(F:), a (G:), A (H:), a (I:). I'm assuming you mean the _RP(D:)?
When I purchased this computer I did make some recovery disks from a prompt, but never knew what to do with them!!
So if everything is as it should be, and I get an external drive(?) do you think I should give it a go?

RP(D:) is your recovery partition. It's what you would use if you ever need to restore your computer back to factory settings.
You should be given an option to either repair or do a full format.

An external drive is a good choice for backing up your files and folders.
As I stated, a repair-in theory-leaves them intact, but we know computers sometimes have a mind of their own, so backing up is a "just in case" measure.

And the bonus is you can use the external drive to back up to on a regular basis, so you'll have everything if your hard drive ever dies and has to be replaced.
