Can you look in Windows Explorer?
If the BIOS sees it, it should be there, unless it is formatted with NTFS? WIN98 won't see that.
I very much doubt it is formatted in NTFS, so it should be there in WINDOWS Explorer, don't get that mixed up?
This is a Screenshot of XP's Windows Explorer, but WIN98 is similar. What you need to click on is the + under My Computer, that will show ALL Drives fitted, including Floppy Drives, HDDs, CD/DVD Drives and even USB Drives, if fitted.

My BIOS on my old computer is Award v4.60PGA and the biggest drive I could use in that was 40GB. His biggest problem is getting more memory in it. As I've suggested search eBay.
He can also unstall DirectX 9.0 I did but the only version that compatable with Win98/ME is DirectX 9.0c (Nov 07). Even though they say all DirectX 9.0 are compatable with ALL Windows versions, none of the later versions will install.

The info. refers to the RAM stick being used.
Quote
RAM (standard) 128 megabytes (MB) SDRAM standard
Maximum 768 MB (3 x 256 MB DIMM)
Speed 100 MHz synchronous
Sockets Three 168-pin DIMMs
Size 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 MB DIMMs
Pairs Required No
Type Supported SDRAM, 100 MHz
100Mhz = PC100 support, hence the suggestion.
Even if you were to put in 133Mhz sticks(like the current one), they would run at 100Mhz.

What I did was click on (Start)
Then click on (Control panel)
Then click on (System)
Then that brought me to Systems Properties where I clicked on (Device Manager) and that is what is in this picture.
This picture is hard to read, what it has is Hard disk controllers expanded and below that are three controllers, the first one has a yellow ! mark over it and says(Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)), the second one says (Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)), and the third on says (VIA Bus master PCI IDE controller)

This picture you may be able to read, its what popped up for the primary controller.
Under the General tab.

On the computer I'm using to post these pictures I left click on the picture to enlarge it. But you guys probably know that already, your the ones that know about this stuff I'm the dummy.
Thanks again, this has been a great learning experience so far!
P.S. Sorry about the small pics but there wasn't enough upload space available so i had to resize them.

Sorry to hear about your wife, hope she get's well soon, and about no Job, Mate!
Let's see if we can give her a Surprise when she get's Home? Hubby is a knowledgable Computer Nerd now? Don't worry, most of us here started off with just as much knowledge as you had at first, when we started Computing.
What you Posted about the Device Manager is related back to when you had the Audio Problems. It is connected to MotherBoard Drivers. Remember I did say this?
Quote
It is really my fault for not insisting that you check them out, Mate, even though the Problem seemed to be solved.
Lets consentrate on getting that Machine running properly first? Where there are no Yellow Marks anywhere in Device Manager, then we can move on?
One thing I did notice was this Thread? Did you actually go into the Registry as told? I hope you diddn't, but if so and you kept a Back up it should be fine. "NEVER FOOL about with the Registry until you KNOW Exactly what to do there." (Abacus Warning)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic281057.html
The Motherboard Drivers and Video Drivers will probably be just as a big a pain in the arse as the Sound Card ones were, but, I think we need to get them so we know it is 100%. Otherwise it is back to chasing ones tail, just like the olden days until I got my Machine organised.
Please keep Records of this, particularly the Things critical to reformat and reinstall and any Passwords and Access Codes, as you propably will need them later. Best keep them in a Special Book, keep it away from the Computer area, I use a Red one, old Journal, with a few blank pages in it, cost, nothing. You can use something like that? Even a Kids old Exercise Book? When we get your Slave Drive going, it is a Magic Place for storing. Who would look in the Book, or access the Slave drive?
BTW. Don't worry about the shortage of Money, many treasures can be found in old Machines, and on the Net. People just give machines away as they have no use for them. I fix people's machines for nothing, if they qualify as needy, in return I get all sorts of things? Old Machines when they eventually upgrade, I use them to help out Disadvantaged People to experience the Net, I often get my Lawns Mowed and other Jobs I am no longer able to do. It is all about giving first? Many of the Free Programs work on the same Principle, they Hope, if you are happy with their work, you will upgrade to their Paid Version. That is really a nice attitude Worldwide. I am a Member here because we all give Time for free, noone gets paid, noone is asked for Money. Those Helped often come back to Help others. That is the Secret of a Great Forum, Mate.

Searching for the Drivers of a HP/Compac Machine may need heaps of Help?
I hope that Help will come.

I also found that ThunderZ that is not what he needs, we tried it on his Sound Card, Before?
There is MoBo Drivers somewhere? from what we know about it?
Video Drivers are to suit whatever Video Card, HP, put into the Machine, at the time?
Back then it was pretty Scarey in what was happening, little standards even thought of.
COMPAQ was the worst, Nothing Matched with other Computers, unless Compaq Brand. HP took over them and blended them in to create confusion that lasts till today.
Try getting HP Drivers, also Compaq Drivers without the exact Machine Details? Even then, it won't help.
Better Monopoly than Mr. Gates has? They have you screwed if you ever decide to change what they gave you on their Machine.
If I was not so far away, I would just give a better Machine to cigam0102, but I admire him to at least Try? to utilise old Parts and make some thing Better out of what he has. That is something we should ALL Support, Mate.
If anyone has an old Install Disk for WIN98, or WIN98SE, from America, that maybe could Help cigam0102 just a bit more, just in case he needs it? Post here. I have a Access Number that is Legal.
Come on People?
This Bloke needs our Help!

Haven't had a lot of time but I was finally able to figure out how to do a screenshot, here is one of the HDD area.
I forgot in my other post that in the area under HDDs there is a red X over what looks like the C drive also. Also booth harddrives are still connected.
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/5089/harddriveq.png
I'm trying to get a screenshot of the area where the audio info is, it appears that the audio, video etc. are on the same card.
P.S. The wife is fine, but she did have to have a heart monitor put on to check her heart beep beeps for two weeks.

I did some more research and found this list of what shipped with the Machine for some more Information for all.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...=bph05813#N1453
More Information on the MotherBoard is Here.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...ocname=bph06062
BTW, that Computer only supports WIN98, and actually came with a 45G HDD, which IMHO is more than adequate for WIN98, unless you are into Movies or Music, in a really big way.
It would appear that the Video is onboard? It is definately not linked to your Modem/Sound Card.
Easiest way to be sure is to look inside the Box and see if the AGP Slot is empty? It really stands out at the Top of the Slots, see Pictures here. Also look at where the Cable from the Monitor plugs into the Computer. If it is Onboard Video it will plug in in the same general area as the Mouse and Keyboard.
http://images.google.com.au/images?hl=en&a...ved=0CBQQsAQwAA
It appears to be that Recovery of Drivers is possible with a Recovery Disk, but given that WIN98 is no longer supported it may not be possible to obtain one, but maybe we can access the Information off the HDD?
Click on Start/Search/for Files or Folders, then "all files and Folders" then type in Recovery, click Search. This may vary slightly for WIN98, it has been a long time. Take note of what it finds and Post it back here.
BTW, glad to hear that your wife is OK. But I do understand how worried you both must be. I spent three days hooked up to similar recently.

Heres the info on what I found under search, recovery!
Hey! Thats cool I can do a screenshot! This AGP slot is deffinately empty. http://images.google.com.au/images?hl=en&a...ved=0CBQQsAQwAA
And I went back here, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...99&lang=en#
One of the updates I didn't do was the BIOS, because it said I need a boot floppy, and when I tried to make one a message came up saying I needed to insert a 98 disk of some kind.
Been jumping around the net tryin to learn all I can.
Glad to here your beep beep thing turned out alright, she has to push a button every time she has an episode!
Later!
