BleepingComputer.com: No mouse function in Safe Mode

When I orginaly purchased this computer it was equipped with Microsoft Wireless Desktop
Elite keyboard and Wireless Intellimouse Explorer. The mouse failed a few years ago
and I replaced it with a Logitech serial mouse. It works fine with the full OS but
doesn't work with Safe Mode. The pointer is visable but I can't more it. The mouse
also works with BartPE but doesn't work when I attemped to install a dual boot with
XP and Ubuntu recently. How can I get full function from the mouse? My OS is Windows
XP Pro SP3.

Do you really have a serial mouse?
If so, you presumably have software for it - reinstall.

I would be inclined to replace your mouse.

OK, you could update your mouse software:

It should work, if you just uninstalled the mouse software, which would
point the finger at the Intellipoint software - possible corruption.

Make sure you uninstall before reinstalling the updated program.

Perhaps you should be installing specifically for the Logitech -
don't know if your mouse picks up on the Intellipoint software:

Recap - uninstall all mouse software.

Reboot.

Try the mouse with XP native drivers - check mouse properties in Control Panel.

Then check Logitech site for correct drivers, if you can identify your mouse there:

Otherwise, try the old drivers, from CNET:

Set mouse properties in Control Panel.

Presumably you have unplugged the mouse a few times and rebooted.

If there is no specific mouse software, you should have basic functions on a reboot.
XP drivers should install automatically and you will then have a mouse icon / section
in Control Panel where you can set mouse properties.

You can try that first.

Have you been able to identify your mouse through the first Logitech link; it asks:

"Where’s the model number located?
Your product’s model number
(which typically looks like M-RBU126, V-UMB46, Y-UV90, R-IG7, etc. )
can usually be found:

On the bottom or rear of the product
On a label inside the battery compartment or underneath the batteries
Behind foam ear cushion (for earphones) or underneath the headband
On a label attached to the USB end of the cable "

I see that typing in the number specified in your earlier post produces no results,
perhaps it needs to be more specific.

Looking at my own system, my mouse is running by reference to
basic (old) Microsoft drivers, there is no additional program for the mouse.

You should not be worried that you will have no pointer - if you uninstall
your specific mouse software, a reboot will give you the basic drivers.

You can uninstall your mouse in Device Manager, if you wish.
Start / Run / type in: devmgmt.msc and click OK.

Right click on 'Mice and other pointing devices'; expand list;
right click on your mouse listed, select 'uninstall' and then reboot.

You could instead choose 'update driver' and see if it will search for the driver for you.
