Help
Harddrive activity seems normal for Windows boot and using the power button to do a Windows Shutdown does exactly what is expected. It has a PCI x16 slot so I bought a card and still no video. The monitor and cable have been replaced.

Both onboard graphics and the graphics card fail to work?
BTW, the 8600 GT needs a minimum 350W PSU(Power supply) to work well and your system only has a generic 300W PSU.
Maybe, the graphics card isn't getting enough power?
Do check the graphics card on another system.

Good point on the PSU. I tried with an Antec Tru 550 with no joy. The card does work on my other machine just fine.

Some component on the motherboard might have gone bad. I'd start with the PCI-Express slot and check the same with another video card.
Worst case scenario, you will have to replace the motherboard.
Do post back with the latest developments.

I'm convinced the MB is whacked.
If I can find a MB compatable with the CPU and RAM, will Windows or other Gateway protections complain that it's not right? How will it affect activation?

Is it still under warranty? If so, you could ask them(Gateway) for a suitable replacement and if it isn't, we will recommend a suitable motherboard for your system.

Cheap. As far as I'm concerned as long as the existing 3500+ and PC3200 work(and it's not a crap board), it's all good. I do have the PCIE card I can use.
Ooh, I just noticed the funky heat sink. but I'm sure I have a HSF that'll work.

Did a bit of research and this is what I've found so far:
1. Motherboards that support Socket 939 BUT REQUIRE MIN. DDR2 Memory modules.
2. Motherboards that support Socket 939 BUT ONLY HAVE AN AGP slot.
3. Motherboards that don't support Socket 939 BUT SUPPORT DDR memory and have a PCI-E slot.
So you will have to make a decision with the above info in mind.
Options:
1. Get new CPU+MOBO+RAM
2. Get new MOBO+RAM

I came up with this Asus and this MSI. Your thoughts?
The pricing is more than I think would be worth it. It's just an email box for a sub-senior. I'm thinking a new Lenovo with XP Home loaded will give some peace of mind with a fresh warranty.

Ha, guess I was looking through the wrong bunch of sites.
The MSI MS-7184 board should be perfect (hopefully in stock).
EDIT: The ASUS board has been discontinued(see the link again).
