Help
hey everyone,
my buddy just moved into a new house and when he hooked up his computer, it would not startup. i figured his power supply went bad, and it did. he went and bought a new one and he said it worked fine for the first day. his computer acted normal.
now his computer goes into power saving mode as soon as you press the power button on the tower. his monitor gives that message even when the tower is not powered on. he did also add a 1GB stick of ram to it at the same time. i checked all his connections and everything is fine. it dosent even show the windows XP logo at startup.
anyone know what i can do at this point?
pc going into power saving mode...

well i brought his tower back to my house and hooked it up to my monitor, mouse and keyboard and got the same result. we also switched out the 3v battery on the motherboard but had no luck with it.
anyone have any suggestions?

did you try removing the new memory stick and seeing what that does? and did you replace the PSU with a good one that supplies the proper power/voltage and get it hooked up correctly?

yes we tried removing the old memory stick and still had the same problem. as far as the power supply, i know the one he bought was like a $25 one that he got from Fry's Electronics and is rating at a higher wattage than the original one he had. the connections all seem to be plugged in correctly, all the plugs reach each connection, and i made sure it was not loose.

what brand of PSU? in my experience, 25 bucks seems a little cheap on a PSU. and wattage isnt the only thing you need to look for in a power supply. what brand/model is the PSU?

theres 2 plugs going to a cd-rw drive and dvd-rom drive, a 20 pin plug into the motherboard, another 4 pin into motherboard, hard drive and a floppy drive.

forgot to ask to, when he presses the power button, does the computer itself turn on? do you hear the tell tale beep of a good start, and do the fans spin up?

it is an HP Pavilion a420n, 2.16GHz AMD Athlon processor, 512 mb PC2700, 160gb HD, integrated graphics with 64mb shared video memory. thats what it says on the tower. it dosent have a lot of extras, it dosent even have a video card, just the port on the motherboard for the monitor.
and yes when we start it, it sounds like it starts up just fine, fans spin, the power button lights up and blinks, BUT the fans do spin fast then slow down and keep doing that for a little bit then go to normal.

well, that PSU is a rather weak PSU but I dont think thats your problem. the fact that it boots up normally, and the monitor says its in power savings mode both when the computer is on or when its off points in another direction now that I think about it. I would check the monitor cables and maybe another monitor if you have it, and if that doesn't work, try throwing in an old video card if you have it and see if that does the trick.

ok, i just tried putting in my video card from my old HP tower and nothing. only this time it didnt even show anything on the monitor.

yeah i tried it with his monitor and his cable and then i tried it with my monitor and my cable, and im still getting the same result. im thinking it has to be a hardware failure inside the tower. i just have no idea how to go about checking that.
