My faithful PII has finally failed. My HD is good BUT... I have my business database program on that drive. As I found out earlier on this site, I cant just stick my HD into another PC and boot it ...it wont.
How can I migrate my database which is on my C: drive to a new PC?
The Database program is an Agricultural one that logs farm records. :thumbsup:

You haven't identified your program, however, you need to install the database program
onto your new PC; you should then be able to copy your database files over.

I would imagine that you have backup copies, on separate media.

You could install your old disk in the new computer as a slave drive, search for all database files
and copy to new C:\ drive, or import as below.

In Access, for example, the database file extension is .mdb, so you would search *.mdb on the old drive to find all files.

Or, you could put your old hard disk in an external case; you should then be able to copy or import
your database(s).

In Access, for example, to import, you would select: File / Get External Data.
Should be something similar in your program of choice.

That PII lasted well.

Actually my program is from an English firm. Its called Breeders Assistant. So is it to say that if I place my drive as a slave in my new machine I should still be able to use the program? MY PII is a Compaq Prosignia 720 server. I think it lasted so long cause it has Intel components. Compaq PC's were poor quality generally

The idea of slaving the drive was to get at your files.

The program is unlikely to work from the slave drive, unless it is a pure standalone program.

Further, if you have a new computer, you must check your warranty - ensure there is no
restriction on you opening it up, during the warranty period - you never know.

Compaq = cheap and cheerful!
