Okay, I hope I got these right:

Under "wireless LAN adapter wireless network connection" it lists the physical address as: 00-19-D2-91-2B-7B
(is this the IP address? doesn't look like the one on my laptop...)

there is an IPv4 address listed: 192.168.1.102 (preferred)

subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

default gateway: 192.168.1.1

DNS servers: 68.87.77.130
68.87.72.130

In Vista go to the start globe > search > then type in cmd. It should show up in the left hand window. Right click > run as admin.

incidentally, I did not see an option to run as admin when I right clicked but I did get the cmd prompt, but am guessing I got the correct info.

Thought you would need the run as option. Not a big deal though. You got me the info that I think will get you going.

On the lap top you want to connect go into Control panel > Network connections. Right click on the icon representing the wireless device. Click on properties. In the window that opens click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click on properties. Put a dot in Use the following IP address. In IP address type 192.168.1.4 In Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 In Default gateway 192.168.1.1

Put a dot in Use the following DNS server addresses Then enter 68.87.77.130 & 68.87.72.130 respectively.

Restart the machine and let me know if you have Internet access.

damnit, figured this would happen. I immediately got a window that said something about some features I wouldn't be able to access because I don't have admin rights. sure enough, I cannot get into the properties!!

so, I guess I call my help desk AGAIN to see if they can flippin' help me get flippin' CONNECTED wirelessly! gadzooks, what a flipping wild goose chase. unless you have any other ideas.........

on w/help desk....can guess what they'll tell me.....heavy sigh......

Thought this was your personal PC. At this point there is nothing else I can do for you other then point you to some good places to buy a 50' ethernet cable.

That is a MAC address. A unique ID for that particular NIC = Network Interface Card. All NICs have one.

yea, it's my work laptop. need to work wirelessly until my new chair arrives so that my tendonitis can go away for good! either that or go into the office for the next two weeks....not high on my list as the office is 21 miles away crossing THE worst freeway intersection in the state! the main reason I work from home.....

I got my ticket re-opened and hope the guy I talked to yesterday can sign into my laptop and do the things you have suggested here. I'm not terribly hopeful at this point however.....I need a new company to work for....

but I sure appreciate your help nonetheless. I'm pretty sure you've found the answer as it matches the message I was getting when I attempted to log in via wireless....and, alas, it's not all for naught. I learned a few more things.

so, where can one buy a 50' cable in the twin cities quickly?

maybe Best Buy?

Can`t say if BB in your area carries them. 50' lengths are available but not common in retail stores. I would say something like an Office Max, Staples, or others along those lines may have them. Save a trip and call first.

just reset the router to factory defaults and start from scratch the reset button is in the back hold it in for about 15 seconds with a paper clip that will clear out all the settings your friend used which really were not needed all you really need to do is use encryption on the wireless signal.

after you do the reset log into the router 192.168.1.1 password admin username leave blank after logged in go to wireless setup set a SSID name and what form of encryption you want to use and choose the wireless key for it save the settings go to all you computers that connect wireless and look for the SSID you created and connect it will ask you for the wireless key type that in all done nice and simple connecting to your network should not be made so hard no reason people get to carried away with all that.

just thought I'd put an update here. my friend was able to solve the mystery in just 5 minutes! he put in the key under network connections. odd that the help desk didn't look there? gadzooks! but, he also said that resetting the router was also an option. glad we didn't have to do that tho!
