Seagate Barracuda Question

Hi

I've just bought a Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA II drive for £40 delivered which I thought a bit of a bargain what with five year guarantee & all that. The same store is selling Barracuda 7200.12 drives for a similar price, but mine is 7200.9.

What does this number indicate?

ASRock Conroe (micro ATX) - Ubuntu 12.04/Win 7 Ultimate (x86)
Intel C2D E8400 3.0GHz/low profile Noctua (single fan)
4GB OCZ DDR2 RAM, GeForce GT220 1024MB

Vintage IBM-T21 laptop, Xubuntu Lucid LTS
512MB KingSpec RAM, 1GHz CPU [T22 Fan], Wireless-G PCMCIA, 7200RPM HDD

It's a revision number
Maybe a change in the circuitry or some other change that they keep documentation on

Yes after Googling, there seems to be different models with different amounts of cache. As it's a back-up drive, performance benchmarking is not an issue.

Can 7200RPM have an effect on system responsiveness, say if it's your main OS drive? There seemed to be a small increase in speed on my laptop which was 4200RPM before. Also, is there software that could tell me make/model of my currently installed disk drives before opening her up?
