I've also read where big businesses are hesitant to have their files stored off-site. That's understandable because of the sensitive nature of their files.

Microsoft is an Operating System company.
It makes a decent (I know, I know...) operating system.
It makes a sub-par (IMHO) search engine.
Google is a search engine company.
It makes a great search engine.
My expectations for an OS made by a search engine company are about as high as those I have for a search engine made by an OS company.
Now, if Linus Torvalds made a search engine...

One of my brothers uses Google Docs a lot -- it's pretty easy to make a local copy. Not much help if my FiOS goes down, but you can't stop progress!
