Hi All,

I have had a rash of Windows error messages saying that Windows couldn't open several of my .wps files and saying that they might be corrupt.

I don't want to give up on those documents just yet so I downloaded a Microsoft Office Word Viewer, the old one, to see if I could open them with it.

Then, following the installation instructions, I clicked on the wdviewer.exe installer and got yet another error message.

This one said; Windows Installer ! The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.

Now, as I am the only system administrator of my PC and I haven't set anything like that, that I can remember at least, I would like to know where to look to see the policies that I'm supposed to have set.

Is that something that I would have done through the Control Panel or through the tools settings in Firefox, and why would it only affect this one download?

I mean I download, install and run everything else that I want to on this thing, with no trouble, so why would that program be any different?

Don't know what's going with the installation of the Word viewer, but I will tell you about opening up .wps files:

MS Works and MS Word (full version) can open up .wps files. You would either have had to save the Works file as a .doc file first, or convert the file using Word after the Works Converter was added to your Word program.

My students have come to me many times for assistance with something like this, and without the converter, you can't open it. Rather, you can, but it looks like jibberish.

Hi txtchr, Thanks for dropping in.

I fear that my problem is way worse than just needing to convert documents to a different format to be able to open them..., but who knows, that might work too.

I have been using Microsoft Works Word Processor for some time now and as the default setting for save as seems to be .wps so that is how I have been saving all of my documents.

Now, like all of a sudden I have been having a rash of MS error messages telling me that Works can't open my .wps documents because they are either in use or their format is not supported by any of the installed converters of they are corrupt.

This may happen when I'm working on a new document or one that is a year old.

I'll open something, make changes and then hit Save. Then I get an error message saying that it can't be saved. When that happens the only option that will work is to close the document.

I now know that I had better start copy/pasting every thing to a new document before I close that sucker because once it gets closed it can't be opened again.

Anyway, I wanted to try one of Microsoft's word viewers to see if that might let me gain access to my work. But now something is keeping me from being able to install that, so I'm kind of stuck right now.

Perhaps you should be thinking of reinstalling Works, if you haven't already tried it a dozen times!

The emphasis seems to be on converting and then opening in Word; not helpful, but you may be able to
open your .wps files in Wordpad.

(I recently opened some .wps files created in 1995, in Word 2003!
You could definitely do with the Office suite!).

Hum...? I got a "502 Bad Gateway nginx/0.4.13" from Dr. Web Link Scanner on both of those links so I haven't check either one of them out yet Boo.

No, I haven't done that yet. Not too sure I can reinstall Works though as I don't have the original installation disks.

You had me worried there!

Just checked those links again with the (free) AVG link scanner.

They both open OK and the second link is a Microsoft link.

502 Bad Gateway nginx/0.4.13 MAY be a temporary Firefox issue, not certain; browser+nginx communication error.
May depend on Firefox version, I expect you have the latest though.

IE8 just works for me; Firefox was always touted as being more secure, not sure that's true now.

Workaround:

Right click on .wps file.

'Open With' Wordpad.

Ignore junk round edges.

Highlight text, copy and paste to Notepad, save as .txt.
or just copy text to new .wps document;

or open Works and insert Notepad file - whatever works.

Wot, no disks? Mild pain in derriere!

AND, when you get utterly frustrated with MS, you could go the Linux route.
I haven't installed it because MS suits me, but I have a Linux Mint Live CD,
which is handy anyway, for, e.g. data recovery purposes, no interference from Windows.
For those times, when your computer will just not boot into Windows.

Free ISO download (about 700MB), needs to be burned to CD.
It includes all necessary codecs for music and video and OpenOffice, which
handles most document files and is a great office Suite.

Hey, I have no idea what that bad gateway thing was all about. I just figured that Dr. Web servers were all tied up or something. I tried several more times and kept getting that same message so I gave up.

I just tried, several times, several minutes apart, and now I'm getting an ERROR on the top link and a CLEAN on the bottom link. Not to worry, I'll check em again later too.

What do they call the files that hackers stash on someone else's PC?

I can't think of it right now but this stuff has me worried. Hearing some of the stories about people having viruses that download and store Kiddy porn on their PC so that some perv could look at it without worrying about getting caught because their machine was always clean.

Wonder where I could find a security expert to look at that stuff and tell me what it was?

I've been thinking about salvaging another Hard Drive and giving Linux a go with a duel boot system. I used a Linux Puppy Live CD a couple of times but for some reason I was never able to get it to connect to the internet.

I have been giving OpenOffice a go, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the filter thingy on that sucker to open a document saved in .wps format. I have Microsoft Works 6.0 and I use the word processor that comes with it.

I've been saving all of my documents in the .wps format because I took that to be the programs default setting and it was working good for me.

Now I'm thinking I might have some sort of infection as my documents are starting to turn up unusable one after the other.

You should be able to trust the links, they are both genuine MS. (honestly!)

"How to open Microsoft Works Documents in OpenOffice.org

Workaround for Works users.

To get .wps files into OpenOffice.org 2.x - XP users.

1.Download and install "Word Viewer 2003" from Microsoft

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

2.Download and install "Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter" from Microsoft. (second link on my other post)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

(3.Install both).

4.Start Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 from the Start > (All) Programs menu.

5.An open dialogue appears. At the bottom of this dialogue ensure that the "Files of type" is set to "All Files(*.*)".

6.Now browse to your .wps file and select it

7.Click open. A warning dialogue will appear. If you trust this file et cetera, click yes - your .wps should open.

8.Select all > edit copy >.

9.Now open OpenOffice.org 2.x writer and do edit paste.

10.You should now be looking at your doc in OpenOffice.org 2.x.

11.Choose Save as from the file menu and save your document to your preferred format. "

My 'workaround' was a last resort thing, really - just to enable you to get at the body of the file. There are a lot of junk symbols with .wps files opened in this way - don't think they're ominous. My computer still appears to be free of nasties, after playing with some .wps files for a while in this way. Didn't wish to scare you and I don't believe you should waste your time investigating the junk.

I do use Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Avast Home Edition and Windows Defender, daily. If you think you're infected, head on over to the Security - Am I Infected? What do I do? forum. They generally start with MBAM & SAS.

It's true that systems & WP docs can get hacked, with backdoor programs, but taking the usual precautions should keep you clear.

Grit your teeth, bite the bullet, get those 2 MS downloads and maybe, just maybe, you may be able to move on.
Could be a problem with your link scanner; too robust, maybe, (perish the thought!).

Hi petewills, Thanks for the more than informative reply Boo.

I'm not doubting that those two top links are OK, I already went to the lower one as Dr. Web said it was clean. I don't know why it doesn't like the top link though, unless it's because of that pdf thingy on the end of the link. That sucker is still coming up ERROR every time I check it though.

Now down to the next two links that you gave me. I had already downloaded the top one a week or so ago and I'm getting the lower one downloaded now.

I tried opening that .wps document *pointing up* that I was talking about. It should have had like five pages at the most..., that sucker showed over 10,000 pages when it finished loading...! What a trip.

OK, I have already started a thread where you suggested so I won't be setting up that other program or doing anything else with this until I get things sorted out over there.

Again I want to say "Thank You Boo" for the help and information that you have given me. Have no fear, if I don't reply to you right away, I will get back to you on this thread and let you know how things worked out.

Too much time on my hands.

Been checking out Wordpad; it is a surprisingly good basic processor.
Saves documents in .rtf and text format and they open correctly in Word 2003, i.e. no junk symbols!

Of course I'm going to reply to this. OK I downloaded and installed those two items. Now I have another problem and it has me wondering if I'm turning blond or something.

The only place I can find any mention of that 6-9 converter is in my add\remove programs. So where the heck did that thing install it's self anyway? :thumbsup:

Makes a change to see an MS special in Add / Remove, anyway.

It's a cunning and wicked plot - MS offer the programs and then hide them where you can't find them.

The various converter programs for, say, Word, get installed in bits, all over the place, do not always
appear in A/R, the only way to dump them is a complete uninstall of Office, as far as I know.
Who knows the mind of MS, who wants to.

It's probably to ensure that you can't lift the program in its entirety, because you never know
whether you've got it all - all part of the drive to avoid piracy, etc.

You have a new problem? Time to ask Santa for a new system?

Well, I guess the good news is that I have it. The bad news is that I haven't a clue as to where to look for that little bugger. I've looked every where that I can think of to look, but I'm just not seeing anything that looks like it would be the .exe that makes the darned thing go.

You said you have it on your PC right? So would you mind checking its properties and telling me what name that sucker is hiding under? I figure that msword6-9converter.exe would be way too simple..., but I looked anyway.

No, I don't need the 6-9 converter; I removed Works 7 the minute I got the computer
6 years ago, preferring to use Office (2002 version) and subsequently Office 2003 Professional.

When attempting to open Word docs created by the later Word program (2007), emailed to me,
I was given the option to install various converters, which were downloaded and integrated.

I believe that your main program executable (something like msworks.exe)
just picks up on the 'modules' contained in and operated by various .dll files.

Windows\System32 is an obvious location, but then there are all the folders of the
word processing program, plus common files, shared files etc.

Bear in mind that we don't know what else the Windows installer does, but there's no
executable as such, as far as I can establish.

I would rely on Add / Remove to take out the converter program.
Some of these .dlls may be copies of files already on your computer and needed for other programs.
Removing / deleting any files, other than through Add / Remove, may just create problems.
There's generally a warning about removing shared files and I always leave them in, just in case.

Thanks for that list of possible suspects. After looking at that I decided I best be leaving well enough alone. Thanks for that link too I book marked it for future use.
