I am having problems removing the Security Tool rogue from a pc running Windows XP. I have tried several fixes with no real results. When I boot into safe mode and try to remove the virus (random numbered file created by the rogue) from the starup menu I get a message that I don't have administrative rights to save changes. I've tried logging in using all the profiles including the Administrator option in safe mode.
I tried running program Rkill.com tool to shut down the malware in order to run a removal tool. I double click the program and the Dos prompt opens and runs. It disappears but I see no change to my desktop or in my ability to install software or scan.
Security Tool will not allow the installation of malwarebytes (or any other virus/malware program) or the update of spybot etc.. on my computer. I get to the choose language screen and the install wizard shuts down. I tried renaming the mbam file but did not change the extension. Should I change the file name and extension in safe mode, then reboot normally to scan?
Thank you in advance for any help. I know just enough about computers to be dangerous, so please use small words if you reply
