Hi Experts,

My laptop has been affected with 'Advanced Virus Remover' virus.

I am running Windows XP Professional operating system.

I am seeing many problems and I am positive all these are due to the virus.

My problems are:
1. I tried to boot in safe-mode but I am not able to, everytime I select 'safe-mode' option I get the blue-screen and system reboots. So, I can not do anything in the safe-mode setup.
2. The 'Task Manager' option is greyed-out. When I press CTL+ALT+DEL I am not able to select this option. So, I can not delete any processess.
3. I had Malwarebytes installed and I am not able to run it anymore. I tried renaming the mbam.exe file to some xy12sa.exe but the program runs for couple of seconds and dies.
4. I have McAfee on my laptop and I am not able to run this program too.
5. Due to the virus, I keep getting the pop-ups saying that my system is infected and it offers to scan my laptop.

I do not know what to do? I have lots of data on my laptop and I do not want to loose it. Can someone help me pelase?

Lets try this and get some logs.

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

You will need to run the application again if rebooting the computer occurs along the way.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates,when done
click Scanner tab,select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users

Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
- Close browsers before scanning.
- Scan for tracking cookies.

Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
- Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
- Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
- If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
- Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
Click Close to exit the program.

Hi There,

Thank you for your detailed instruction.

I was able to run RKill, which seems terminating the virus processess.

I was unable to run MBAM no matter what I do. I tried re-installing but in the end it crashes and I get a blue-screen.

I was able to run TFC with out any problem.

I was able to install SUPERAntiSpyware, which detected 137 viruses but when I was deleting in the end the program crashed and I got a blue-screen. After rebooting my laptop I am not able to launch SUPERAntiSpyware anymore. It is giving permissions error.

Since I was not able to boot into Safe Mode using F8, I tried selecting to boot in Safe Mode in the MSConfig program. But since then I am not able to boot normally too. After a minute or so I get the blue-screen and the laptop reboots. This is happenening continuously. Can some one help please???? :thumbsup:

From BC tutorial this section Problems that can occur by forcing Safe Mode using the System Configuration Utility

If a situation like this has happened to you it is possible to fix this problem by renaming your boot.ini file. The first step would be to use a boot disk to start your computer. If your computer does not have a floppy disk, then you can typically boot off the Windows CD that came with your computer in order to access the Windows Recovery Console. More information about the Windows Recovery Console can be found here. Once booted to a command prompt, you would simply rename your C:\Boot.ini file to another name like C:\Boot.ini.bak. The command to rename the file at the command prompt is:

ren C:\Boot.ini Boot.ini.bak

Once the file is renamed, you can then remove the boot disk and reboot your computer to get back to normal mode. When booting up after the rename, do not be surprised if you see an error stating that you do not have a valid Boot.ini file. When you get back to normal Windows mode, you can then rename C:\Boot.ini.bak to C:\Boot.ini and run Msconfig again to remove the /safeboot flag.

Conclusion

It is not uncommon when people are helping you troubleshoot your computer that they tell you to enter Safe Mode. With this tutorial you should now know how to enter Safe Mode when it is required.
