hello all,

I am hoping someone can help. I have a linksys router. Occasionally I access my settings and check to see if there are any firmware updates available, however;recently whenever I enter 192.168.1.1 I get the message "cannot connect to the server 192.168.1.1" I have been trying for several days without success.

any ideas?

Thanks,

Jim

I am running windows xp

Hello CaveDweller,

Thanks for your response.

I tried posting the info you are looking for but it won't let me cut/past. Is there some specific info that would be helpful to you ?

Right click in the command prompt window, then left click on Select All. Right click once more to copy the contents to the clip board. Now you can paste to Notepad and edit if you wish.

Are you sure you typed it correctly? Just checking, its the easiest mistake. Click http://192.168.1.1

I'll assume you've made sure of any typos. Lets try pinging that IP address, at a command prompt type ping 192.168.1.1 and hit Enter. You are looking for the line Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 and you want to see those numbers as well. Can you post what you get please.

And you are still getting the error?

Is there another PC connected that you can try it on?

What browser are you using? IE? Firefox? something else?

You can surf OK right? To other web pages.

I am baffled lol. You can ping it NP and it is your default gateway, so you should be able to get into the web UI. If you don't have another PC to try it on, unplug the router for a minute or so and plug it back in. Once the lights have settled on it, at a command prompt type ipconfig /release and hit Enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and hit Enter. Then open a browser and try.

CaveDweller,

It's fixed!!

I was not able to access via my other PC so I did the release/renew, and I am now able to access my settings. Thank you for all your help!

P.S. just a side question regarding firmware. If my router is working properly, is it necessary to upgrade the firmware on a regular basis?

If the newer firmware offers security fixes or functionality that you require then yes, upgrade it. Firmware and drivers are two items where newer is not necessarily better

Glad its working. Did you also reboot the router?

Daffy hit the nail on the head. I update firmware and drivers only when the piece of hardware doesn't do something I need it to and the update will allow it to happen. Go with the old saying: If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Hello CaveDweller,

I did reboot the router, and did not get any results, so I went to the renewing my IP address option and that worked. Thanks again for all of your help
