BleepingComputer.com: Windows XP DLL Bad Image error

I posted about this issue about a month ago and it was moved and I can not find the help that I need.

I have tried everything for several months to fix my computer, including removing Malware etc. Apparently there is something wrong with the XP operating system. I do have the disks. Is there a way to reinstall without loosing my data, jpegs (I backed up most but there are over 3,000 where the trail is too long and they won't move over to my WD external). What about my Word Docs, Excel, and Scans? Can I stick this disk in and use it to "Repair" without loosing my Data?

I need specific instructions for fixing this problem, including which disk I need to use. I think it's the "Orange" one labeled "Operating System" already installed on your computer Reinstallation DVD, Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with update rollup 2 (Dell) I have a Dimension E310.

I also have a blue DVD titled "Drivers and Utilities" (already installed) and "Application" (Already installed). Do I need to do anything with these. I am typing on my Netbook but main computer has been unusable.

You might consider booting with a Linux Live CD, to see if you can still read the drive.
If so, you can copy what you want, onto an external drive and work on fixing the crippled drive afterwards.

If you have your files safe, you can test your OS disks without worrying.

You could then do a complete reinstall, instead of a repair, as it's
difficult to know what would be left, after a repair. Might work, might not.

Keeping a Linux disk handy enables you to boot,
without interference from Windows.

It's a 700MB download of the ISO, which you need to burn to a CD.

(Ubuntu is a popular distribution, which works well and also Linux Mint 7.).

Read all the info first, if you're dubious.

I would opt for a reinstall, rather than a 'fix'.

Re-imaging my computer, reinstalling is what everyone says to do because it is easy. Someone recommended talking to the experts on this web-site. With all the antivirus software and Malware etc. (this computer has Macafee licensed through comcast), I can't believe there is no way to get this one error message resolved without dumping all of my data.

Well, it's your choice, of course.

If you want to spend months trying to resolve the problem, so be it.

Linux CDs are regularly used to save data - don't quite follow your drift.

I would suggest that using the computer, whilst you still have the malware problem,
is perhaps not prudent.

Was SuperAntiSpyware included in the tools you previously tried
or had recommended to you. It can be quite effective in picking up
items missed by other scanners.

If you have not done this, can I suggest that you boot in safe mode and attempt to delete the file
from Windows\System32.

System manufacturer and model?

FWIW: XP CDs supplied by a system manufacturer (e.g., HP, eMachines, Dell, etc.)...do not necessarily allow for a repair install effort. These disks are provided (often) with the sole purpose of returning the system to the same state it was when originally acquired.

To expect to do any sort of repair effort...with such disks...is unrealistic, IMO. That said, you need to review the owner's manual and any documentation which may be on the system manufacturer's website...in order to know exactly how these disks may be used and what the limitations may be.
