BleepingComputer.com: Can't Repair Vista Using Install Disc

My Vista system is so screwed up that I can't install SP2. Even Microsoft Tech Support gave up after 3 days and 6 or 7 hours of phone calls and online chat. Now, I wan't to install Win 7 and need to do a really good backup to use with Windows Transfer Wizard, but I need the Vista OS to be as up-to-date as I can make it. I think part of my problem goes back to a now-long-removed installation of WinStep Extreme, but I'm not sure. In any case it seems that my index hierarchy is totally out of whack. All the usual measures (i.e.: DSKCHK, etc) weren't successful, so wanted to run Vista Repair from Disk, but the screen doesn't offer me the "REPAIR" option. Now, what?

hi,,,, shove the recovery disc in the drive and open command prompt with admin level and run a system file check
sfc /scannow ,,,,,, this is the command to copy and paste in the prompt,,,
