Quote

I never dreamed that slowly cruising on my motorcycle through a residential neighborhood could be so incredibly dangerous!
. . .

Little did I suspect. . .
. . .

As I passed an oncoming car, a brown furry missile shot
out from under it and tumbled to a stop immediately in front of me. It was a squirrel, and must have been trying to run across the road when it encountered the car. I really was not going very fast, but there was no time to brake or avoid it - it was that close.

I hate to run over animals, and I really hate it on a motorcycle, but a squirrel should pose no danger to me. I barely had time to brace for the
impact. . .

Any small object can pose a great threat to motorcycle riders. I used to want to ride, got to reading on it. Very dangerous. Even a piece of shredded tire in the shoulder of a highway can be extremely dangerous.

If you read the entire story, it moves into the realm of the fantastic or surreal. I don't know what happened, but the link that I thought I'd edited in didn't show. It's there now. The whole story is quite entertaining.

That is a funny story, I don't see why it couldn't be true although it sounds maybe a little exagerated, after all this guy is trying to sell books.

Last year I had a couple of squirrels break into my attic and set up housekeeping. In the course of trying to deal with them I registered at a site run by an exterminator with an entire section devoted to squirrels. Someone posted that story as their own, under their own name. I suspect it's making the rounds -- but it is a fun read!

The grey squirrels that visit my garden are the neighbourhood mafia! They harass the birds and steal the nuts put out for the small birds. They even 'chatter' at the cats from a distance.

Yes, those bad bully grey squirrels have increased in huge numbers since the beginning of last century apparently, and are thought to be less susceptible to diseases that have affected the red population of squirrels, plus as you say Mark, it is thought that the grey squirrels have actively driven the red squirrels north into Scotland.

I was a little girl when I last saw any red squirrels over here. There are some red squirrel conservation areas in England and Wales, but Scotland seems to be the best place to be in the British Isles if you are a red squirrel!
