Computer wont load Really need to fix this computer

My computer wont load at all. it only goes to the gateway logo and gives 2 options boot menu and bios menu. I am not able to select any of the 2 options at all. I also put the recovery disk and it wont load that either. I tried unplugging it and leaving it unplug and still nothing. The computer was on standby when i tried it to bring it from standby thats when it didnt want to anything. I restarted the computer and thats when i had notice that logo. Theres no error message at all.


If anyone could help me on this since this is the computer I use for everything.

When your machine boots up, does it show anything like no boot drive or no operating system?

When you go into the BIOS, is the drive recognized?

What model computer do you have?

ok when the computer boots it just shows the gateway logo with the 2 options and horizontal lines. I am not able to go into bios also no error message just stays there. the model is a GT5656

If you hit F2 to enter the bios and leave it sit for a few minutes will it go into the bios?

no it will not go to the bios at all. could it be that the mother board is bad? the reason i say that is that i have a hp computer that did almost the samething kept on rebooting but only the start hp part will load and then restart again when it was under warranty hp got it fix and replace the mother board.

This computer is out of warranty

There are usually two ways to bring up recovery boot options. One is to press F8 to bring up the alternative methods to boot Windows. Another is to press F12 or F11 (depending on model) to boot from something other than a hard drive.

Be careful, the Gateway Recovery options are a destructive method - meaining they can wipe your hard drive and data in order to restore your system. If you choose to use the Gateway Restore option, choose the one where you backup you hard drive before restoring.

I forgot to mention, you must immediately press F8 when you first turn your computer on to get to the alternative startup options.

it will not allow me to do that at all. when the computer is turned on it show the 2 options and the logo of gateway but thats it. it freezes there and cant do anything else.

From what you are describing, and what you have tried, it sounds like your hard drive is dead. But, let's test.

Open your computer and pull the IDE cable from the hard drive. Turn your computer on and see if you can get into the BIOS. If you can, you have found the culprit and need a replacement hard drive.

If it does not, let us know what it does do and we'll be happy to help.

thank you for your responds back and help..


Am still having the problem I had disconnected the hard drive and also the optical drive just in case and still the same issue wont load just the 2 options but when i press the f option wont do anything at all. I had read somewere on the internet that theres a way to reset the motherboard on the hardware itself but was not able to find it where and how to do that. It was just a comment from someone else. Do you happen to know how to do that and do you think that will fix the problem?

ok i did that and it load to a screen that says


main processor : amd althlon 64 x2 dual core processor 6000+
memory testing: 3145728k ok with 128 shared memory

IDE CHANNEL 0 MASTER : OPTIARC DVD RW ad-7173a 1-03
ide channel 0 slave: none

Ide channel 2 master: wdc wd5000aaks-ooyga0 12.01c02
ide channel 3 master:none

Ide channel 4 master :none
ide channel 5 master : none

CMOS checksum error- Defaults loaded

press f1 to continue, F2 to enter Setup



This is what happen after i switched the jumper to 2, 3

Now what do I do after that ???

Looks like we are doing some type of progress

Press F1 and see if your computer will load into the operating system.

If not tell us what errors show on the screen.

ok the computer did load all the way but i asked me if i wanted to load normally or safe mode i went to safe mode just in case not sure if we will need to do something on the computer. Also if that fix the issue and theres nothing else we need to do. Do i need to switch the jumper back to the original way? What could of cause this to happen? and if i need to switch the jumper back and the same issue happens again what are the options? Would it hurt it if i leave it on the jumper?

Your jumper on your motherboard should be set as follows:

•Pins 1 and 2 covered - Normal operation (shown)
•Pins 2 and 3 covered - Clear CMOS enabled

Now, if you set the jumper back and your computer will not boot again or stalls like it has been, it is very possible that you will need to replace the CMOS battery. Don't worry, they are easily sourced from places like walmart, kmart, maybe even your local drug store ( walgreens, CVS, etc. ).
