Problem with RAM upgrade

i have a HP Pavilion a820n it came with 512mb of ram and Windows XP.

Now the problem. I bought 2x 1gb sticks and i cant get it to work with both sticks. It works fine with 1 stick and it works fine with the 512 but not with both 2gb sticks or any combination of the 1gb and the 2x 256mb sticks.

If i use more than 1 of the 1gig sticks it will work great for a while. Sometimes a few hours sometimes a few minutes but eventually it will lock up.

The 1 gig sticks are the same brand style ect. Shouldnt i be able to use both? According to crucial i should be able to use 4 gigs??

Is there any setting or something i am doping wrong?

PS i have tried reseating several times, its not that.

Download, follow directions and burn it to CD, or make a boot floppy. Boot from the CD (or floppy) and run the test for awhile to see if it finds any memory errors.

Sometimes memory just has incompatabilities. If a stick turns out bad, RMA it.

Do you have any provision in the BIOS to change your memory timings or voltage?

Are you installing your RAM in adjacent slots? Have you tried installing in alternating slots? Have you tried all the motherboard slots...with just your two new modules?

I dont know any thing about bios. As for trying in different slots i have tried it every way i can think of. I will run the test and let you know what it finds

Questions:

Name of the manufacturer for your memory?
Memory type (RIMM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, etc)
Memory speed (PC1600, PC2700, PC 3200, etc.)

The specs for your machine state that you need DDR memory and the speed ranges are PC-2100 to PC-3200. Because you have four slots on your motherboard, you need to replace them in pairs but note the following:

If you use two memory dimms at a time, install them in the following configuration -

Install one in position one, the other in position three, OR
Install one in position two, the other in position four

Your motherboard DOES NOT support double-sided 16-bit DDR Memory

One last thing, you have to make sure that your memory frequency (clock speed) matches the clock speed on your Front Side Bus (FSB).

According to the Super-Talent web site (http://www.supertalent.com/products/product_detail.php?PN=D32PB1GN), the memory you are using is made specifically to be used in an APPLE computer, not a HP Pavilion a820n.

Follow me for a second:

Any hardware specifically designed for an Apple platform will not work properly in an Intel, AMD, or x86 machine unless it is specifically designed to do so. I don't think in this case that your memory is compatible in a PC (x86 or i86) computer.

Using the memory configurator on the Super Talent web site, if you want to use 1GB sticks in your computer - you need the following part numbers:

S1GDU8DHX
S1GDU9DLX
D32PB1GX

Thanks alot for the info. Whats weird is that i can use 1 of the sticks at a time with no problem. Its when i try to use both. Oh well i guess i will use 1 stick untill i can afford to get another 2 of the right stuff. Still better that the 2 x 256 i had before lol

I apologize for bringing up such an old thread. I was searching and found this thread and noticed that my dad was having a very similar issue, same part number and all. The Super-Talent website mentioned does not mention anything specific about only to be used in an Apple computer? I have attempted to search the part number on Google, and cannot find anything that supports this claim? Can someone clarify this please? Thanks.
