I have a Compaq laptop and use it most of the time on AC. The AC adapter went bad and so I found 1 that my son had but it is a Dell. My old one said output voltage was 18.5 volts. The Dell adapter said output is 19 volts. I thought that it would probably work. I changed the plug to adapt it to my compaq.
Then I got the idea that I should check the output voltage before using it. When I checked it with my volt meter, it pegged the needle on the 50 volt scale. But it hardly moved the needle on the 250 volt scale. So then I wondered if my meter was ok. I checked it on the door chime transformer and it seemed to read right.
So My Question is "Would this be a normal no load voltage on this AC Adapter, or is it messed up?"
