Why does Windows Explorer crash everytime i click or open an AVI file, i use VLC

Recently everytime i click an AVI file or open it, my windows explorer crashes, desktop goes away for a few seconds and then comes right back... What's the problem?

im on Windows XP SP3 Home Edition
1GB RAM
Intel Pentium 4
1.60 Ghz
