Generally on the .net framework

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic264765.html

Worth reading.

FYI - I have the following:

Version 2.0
Version 3.0
Version 3.5 SP1

Version 1.1 does not seem to be necessary and when it is offered
as an update, if it will not install, you can select 'Don't show this update again'.

No program has called for the 1.1 version; until that happens, I regard it as unnecessary.

What versions do you have? Check Add /Remove.

To get to 3.5 SP1:

Uninstall other versions first.

Install:

cumulative update for .net framework 3.5 SP1

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

You should then update through Windows Update.

If you do uninstall all:

see Louis' post, on the way to do it:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic268334.html

Most recent version should come off first.

Hello and thanks for your answer.
I have
.net 1.1
.net 1.1 security update (KB953297)
.net 3.5 sp1

As I have no problems at all I will follow your suggestion "dont show this update again"

Thanks

http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r231...-2009~reverse=1

Long thread that discusses various causes and fixes for this issue. I had one laptop that developed this error and it was easier to nuke the whole thing than thrash around with all the possible fixes.

Simple fixes like uninstall/reinstall worked for some, others it did not. Dotnetfix works for some who had other visual studio redistributables installed but if you get to that point, only download from an actual microsoft site since malware makers have seeded a hacked dropper into those available on several warez/crack sites.

This is the link provided by Microsoft for the dotnetfx tool:

http://windowsuu.com/tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

It is to be used if Add / Remove doesn't work.
