Sorry but didn't know the right forum to post this. I would like to add some security to my wireless router. Do I simply change the "name" from linksys to something else?? Any step by step help would be greatly appreciated

I have never changed or added anything to the router settings Linksys WRT54G

Sorry it took so long for us to get back to you.


I recommend you directly connect to your router for this

Open your browser
in your address bar type: 192.168.1.1
(press enter)
It will prompt you for a username/password.
Leave the username blank, the password is "admin" (you can ultimately change it if you want)

At this point should be at your routers configuration utility
Note: You are not in any way connected to Linksys's website. The configuration utility is hosted by the router. (192.168.1.1 is the router's internal address)

Click the "wireless" tab.
You should be at "Basic Wireless Settings"
Change the network's name, channel, etc (just pick a random channel)
click "save settings"

There should be a purple tab that says "Wireless Security", click that
Here you can set the network password
I recommend you use the "wpa2 personal" security mode with the "tkip+aes" algorithm.
click "save settings"

You're set!

Also, under "administration" there is a firmware upgrade tab.
I highly recommend you go here and get the latest firmware for your router. (it fixes some bugs and security vulnerabilities)

Thank you so much for the reply. I had already figured it out although I chose WPA not the WPA2. Guess I can go back and change that. I also did as you said and upgraded the firmware.
