BleepingComputer.com: Windows 98 Printing from MS-DOS issue

Greetings,

I have a 98 machine which I need to run an old dos program on. Everything in the program works fine except printing.... now.

I use to have a dot matrix printer hooked up to the 98 machine and it worked flawlessly for a good 10 years. Last week we had a power surge and fried the dot matrix printer.

I took an old HP P1000 deskjet type printer with a LPT port on the back and tried to install it. I used the discs that came with it. When I try to print from the dos program, it backs me our and gives me a message telling me that I have both Windows and a Dos program trying to use the printer. It asks me to pick either one. No matter what option I use, I am unable to print from the dos based program.

I also tried installing the printer as a generic printer in windows and allow it to print from MS-DOS programs. That didn't work either.

I do have a NETWORK printer installed on our network. I wonder if I am able to "Capture Printer Port" with a network printer (not a networkED pritner but a printer with an ethernet port and its own IP address).

Any help would be great.

Just a dumb idea! Why not try disabling the printer in Windows then try to DOS print, seems like there should be a simple way around this
