how do i detect and remove bloatware?
I'm not aware of a "bloatware" detector, Dan.
However, programs like a Dell program that monitors your system for updates, Adobe Reader, some AV/AS suites, and other background processes that are not necessary, will slow down a system somewhat.
I would uninstall Adobe Reader and install the less obtrusive Foxit PDF reader, for example. I would uninstall Dell's proprietary software that checks for updates (as I did with Gateway's "BigFix" on my notebook), and use the free, Secunia Personal Software Inspector, although, with a new system running a new OS (W7), maybe I'd keep it running for a month or so as Dell developes better W7 drivers for the system.
Don't know what else you have running in background. Perhaps the "bundled" AV Suite, which you can uninstal and install something else, uses more overhead than something like the free AVG, or AVAST!, or even Microsoft's free
Security Essentials program.
Each PC manufacturer does things differently.
Perhaps someone more familiar with what is bundled on a Dell can be more specific in recommendations?
