Stop handing people solutions on a platter and point them to where they can find it themselves.
If he can't find it, he's being lazy.

I'm trying to learn Ubuntu a little at a time. Please give me a straight answer..
I have no time to read all about it nor a desire to at this time.
No wonder they give Ubuntu away.
They can't sell an OS that things don't work on.

Perhaps you misunderstand what we do here at Bleeping Computer.
Providing help and solutions is what we do!
If all you can add is point them to where they can find it themselves.
maybe this is not the forum for you. Users new to Linux can indeed read docs, but that doesn't mean
they comprehend what those docs are saying.

The reason behind this is due to GPL and proprietary code.
Some things just can't be included in the base distro and must be
installed separately.

Fair enough but just where do you download the app to install is all I want to know for now?

Synaptic has all the software you need.
Here's a little demo i made for you.
http://rawcreations.net/jabber/synaptic.htm
Yours will look different and will have different packages
since you use Ubuntu.
Perhaps you want to try PCLinuxOS?

Thanks for the demo but I still don't understand where to get it.
I've always worked with windows and find Ubuntu very confusing.

@ Irishgrandfather

There is no need to continually keep quoting previous posts when you reply
Unless it's pertinent, it just wastes bandwith and adds confusion

I apologize irishgodfather; BC is supposed to be a place where everyone gets friendly help, not sarcastic comments. I need to hijack this thread for just a moment.

Congratulations bisquit maker for being the epitome of everything that is wrong with the Linux community, reinforcing why Bleeping Computer was founded in the first place, and proving yourself a world class jackass. Now when people want to know why they shouldn't switch to Linux, I can point them to this thread and say "Because you run across elitist pieces of bleep like this who make it impossible for the Linux community to be anything but fragmented, disjointed groups fighting with each other." On the other hand, when people do need help with Linux, I can steer them to members like Raw, Amazing Andrew, or BlackSpyder, who actually know what they are talking about.

I'm pretty sure that you won't miss being a member of this community.

I now return you to your thread......

irishgodfather, Synaptic is a program already included in Ubuntu.
Unfortunately I don't use Ubuntu so I can't be specific to it's location.
However if you can find and open a terminal and type: sudo synaptic
That should get Synaptic open.

Irishgodfather - hope you didn't get intimidated by the previous negative comments, there are a lot of good folks here that will help you.

Since I use Ubuntu 9.10 myself, I'm going to give you a little more info about Synaptic Package Manager that raw mentioned.

To access SPM in Ubuntu, click on System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager. First of all, look down in the lower left and see if there are any broken packages. If so, go up top and click on edit and select fix Broken packages.

Now, you should install all the packages given in the previous posts. With SPM open, you can see that there are 20,000+ packages available - so here's how to make it much easier. Copy the packages one at a time and paste them in to the Quick Search in SPM. Here's one additional package that might help - alsa - utils.

Ok, to install packages - when you locate the package you want to install, first check the box to the left of the package description. Then click mark for installation. The pop-up box may show additional packages, but that's fine, it's just dependencies it needs to function, click mark. then you'll see a green checkmark at the upper portion of the screen - click on it. In the pop-up box next shown click apply.

You may be prompted to give your password somewhere along the way. Hope I haven't overlooked anything along the way, so if you have any problems please let us know.

Hey Irishgodfather
Real quick, while you are on a site which has sound on it... like a youtube video, see if the sound card detects it.
To do so follow these steps:
  1. Go to a site with sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ZAGBL6UBA <--personal favorite tongue.gif
  2. Click on the top off the Firefox window. (That is simply to remove you from the flash controller)
  3. Press Alt + F2, this should launch the Run Application Window.
  4. In this window type in "gnome-volume-control" (without the quotes)
  5. In the window that appears click on the Applications tab.
  6. Make sure the video is still playing.
  7. Look at the list of applications that is shown in that Applications tab. Mine says ALSA plug-in(firefox).
  8. Post here what it says, if possible please post a screenshot.
  9. To take a screenshot simply press the [print scr] button. It is usually near the "Insert" button.
  10. After you press that button, it will ask you to save the picture, save it onto your desktop.
  11. Then upload that picture onto this site so we can see it.
That will help us get started with what the problem is
Hope that helps
post with any questions

All OS's have problems.
Including Windows. Heaps of people have had problems with sound on Windows.

Maybe he cant find it because there is no solutions or he just needs some one to help him guide him the way.

But am sure there is a solution.
