Depends on the task. But if it supports multi core the Tri core would be. I'd probably get the AMD Tri core, but the x4 quad isn't much more expensive ;)

Agreed, it depends on the task. If the application supports more than two cores, say, three or four, then the triple core CPU would have greater performance despite the slower clock speed. However, if the application is limited to one or two cores, then the dual core CPU will work better since it has the higher clock speed.

All software supports at least one core. Supporting extra cores is a feature. Newer games almost always allow for dual cores with some high-profile, or high-budget, games allowing for quad core. A simple Internet search or a look through on the application support site should give you the answers.
