Also, how much you willing to spend and what you gonna use the comp for?

Tbh. Or did I miss you post it wacko.gif

If you don't post a budget, I'll assume your budget is endless. If so be it, get a bigger case and a 5850 :D

I do suggest change the case to something else. Antec 300 would work wonders.

Well Lad, I see your a fan of the Antec 300! A really quiet one that one. I have several clients who have requested this case. My last build was a Linux openSUSE os, MSI board, AMD 5600 cpu,EVGA 8600 graphics, really quiet. Cheers! Alan

Here we go, I think I have a decision made.(at least until someone recommends something else:))

I am going to stay with the Phenom II X2 550 BE

Changed MB to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128398
GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT-UD3H AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

I am considering changing the video card to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102848
SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100269VXLE Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail

I decided that if I am going to spend more maybe it should be in the graphics. My only concern is will the PS I have selected handle this card.

As for the case I don't quite understand why the Antec is being recommended over the one I chose. The Raidmax is very similiar in physical dimensions yet has twice the fans so I think I must be missing something here.

Have at it guys:)

Can I ask why are you gonna stay with the Dual Core? You can get a quad core into you budget?

DJBPace and I both posted something that is better. It makes no sense to not get a Quad Core now that you can, every game that's gonna come out will support Quad Cores, meaning you get better performance. And personally I'd stick with a 5xxx series card, although the 4890 is better it's not DX11, no DX11 games yet but they will come in time. If you want to spend more on a GPU go for the 5850, I considered buying this myself for awhile but I want to wait it out till Christmas.

The reason I advised a different case, it doesn't really have to be the Antec. The problem I have with that Raidmax is the fact the reviews have it as an average case, 69% gave it 5 stars compared to the 79% of the Antec and the Antec is cheaper. Honestly that Raidmax just looks like a cheaply made case, and I think the reviews reflect that. It's not just the specs you need to look at when buying a case, people's experiences with it are what you should look out for, they will be the ones telling you what the case is like to work with. If the case is made of cheap parts, do you think the manufacturer would say that? No, it takes the people using it.

If you will, post all the build you're considering buying now. PSU and everything else.

I was curious as to that myself, if you play newer games then the quad core will offer a substantial improvement over a dual. Of course, the game will need to designed for more than two cores. The 4890 is also a good choice if you're really counting pennies, but the 5770 offers most of the same plus it takes less power, is DX11 capable, and produces less heat. Please post your entire parts list so we can see where you stand now.

My original budget was about $950 (including OS and Monitor) - Here is why. I was looking at the Acer Aspire U5802A Quad Core Q9400 ($800 to start then $750) and an HP ( see my post in buying a new computer). Based on those responses and my own desire to get back in to computers ( I used to follow developments much more) I decided to build my own to get the better of all components rather than a few good and a few mediocre ( which is what I see in the prebuilts).

After reading many of the ratings on the Phenom II 550 BE, I saw many people stating that it could be unlocked and compete with the quad cores. This, with the added savings seemed like a logical choice.

My choices to change MB's was mainly due to the memory standard and the availability of firewire. Looking to the future I thought the firewire would be a good option.

The future is also why I decided to change from the GTS 250 to a Radeon video card to possibly take advantage of crossfire. (Keep in mind that I am only an occasional gamer but want quality video when I do play and may want to add a blueray player.) I would say that the video has been the hardest decision based on your inputs and reviews that I have found throughout the web. I have even considered spending the extra money to go to the GTX 260 but not sure I can get a MB to work with my other wants and budget.

I'm not sure why the 5770 is cheaper than the 4890 considering it is newer and DX11.

Here is the complete build as currently planned but as you can tell that is subject to change. (Most susceptible to change would be the video card)

It looks really good! You won't need any additional cables, the motherboard will come with about 4 Sata cables atleast I'd think. Mine came with 6, so that shouldn't be a problem.

One thing I'd add is a Mugen 2 CPU cooler, it's $30 but well worth it in my books the stock coolers for CPU's tend to be noisy. And for $30 for something can you could OC comfortable with aswell it's a great buy. But in saying that, it's not totally necessary just what I'd do.

If you're looking for a moniter DJBpace should have some good recommendations for you. I use my T220 Samsung(not the HD version) and it's great.

Got a questions on the OS. On the oem version of Win7 it says that the builder is responsible for support. I don't get this. My last computer I bought at a show and it has the OEM version on it. I guess I don't really understand what the "support" actually is. I guess I can't recall needing any support for my XP Home version. Also, I read that the registering or authentication is supposed to be done by by the builder and then does not require anything to be done by the end user, which is actually me. What is the deal here? Also, if I do go with the oem version, is it worth it to go up from home premium to pro for the approx $30?

The difference between OEM and Retail is that you can only ever install the OEM onto one computer (as defined as the motherboard). With retail, you can install Windows onto multiple, as long as only one at a time has it installed.

No, it's not worth it. The only other version of Windows 7 you should possibly ever look at is Ultimate.

...and even Ultimate is totally unnecessary for almost all home users, unless you want certain features only enterprises use. Here's a graph that breaks down what each edition has.
