I was looking for a good external hard drive to store all of my games and movies on and was wondering if the 2TB Seagate Freeagent External Hard Drive was any good. I'll be buying from another store for a cheaper price though.

It's a bad idea to store games on an external hard drive.

While I am not a big fan of any of the ready-made external hard drives. Find they seem to lack proper cooling and have poor reliability over-all. Have also read they continue to have problems with the 1 TB and larger drives.

Having said that I am curious about RainbowSix`s statement. I would not install and play the games from the external drive. I see no problems (other then what I already stated) with storing them on an external drive.

Unless it's an external SATA hard drive, the loading speeds will be much slower than on an internal hard drive. USB has a max bandwidth of up to 480mbps. SATA has a bandwidth of 3Gbps.

I realize that. I said do not install on an external drive. Silverpl105 stated he wanted to store them on an external drive.

Such a large drive would work well for storing media. How, exactly, would games be stored and not installed with an external drive? Most games use DRM that checks the disc, so you cannot copy the files and folders. Those that use online only authentication rarely need discs after install. You could also use a drive emulator to create an image of the game, but that is not always a good idea. If most of your games come from Digital River, Direct2Drive, or some other digital distribution service, then I could see using it to store the EXE's and ISO's. I used an external drive to install games, just remember to have it plugged in when you play and uninstall the titles before you wipe the drive. You would also have to deal with USB's slowness, unless you get an eSATA drive.

I believe most laptops don't even have an external SATA port. Unless you have a laptop, just buy another internal HDD like the SAMSUNG EcoGreen F2 HD154UI 1.5TB
