BleepingComputer.com: how to extact .rom file from bios update

hey guys
am going to try to change the bios rom file(with bios tools )
but when trying to back up the bios in dos (with AMI program) it says it cant access or cant backup

so i downloaded the packard bell update(for my motherboard)
it exacted on a floppy
the file that i think has the .bin or .rom file is HOUS_PBC.30Y or FLASH837.EXE or choice.com
the other files are dos files.

so how can i extract the bios file ?

I can't answer your question, but I guess you are aware that a boo boo in your BIOS will turn your computer into a very good anchor. It is definitely not something to play with.

That sounds like it created a DOS boot disk. Is there an autoexec.bat file? If there is it probably sets up the flash procedure automatically, and a look in the bat file with notepad would confirm this. choice.com is usually used in autoexec.bat to offer a simple menu selection, eg save existing BIOS, load BIOS update etc.

If it's an auto functioning boot disk like this, you'll just need to boot up from it.

In that case I'd say if you choose Yes then the HOUS_PBC.30Y rom file will be flashed in. The flashing utility is probably AMIFlash Ver 8.37, which is a very popular and universal utility, hence the FLASH837.

In the autoexec.bat file there should be a line something like:

FLASH837 HOUS_PBC.30Y /b /n /-o /-c /-d /-r /v /-i /-k /-e /-g

which would confirm what operation would be performed.

You should be able to type FLASH837 /? from the A: prompt, and get an ID screen with command line options listed.

Before trying the flash, that version may be able to do the backup of the current BIOS. If it is AMIFlash, the suggested command seems to be:

FLASH837 /b /n /-o /-c /-d /-r /v /-i /-k /-e /-g /sfilename

Note that there is no space between the final "s" and the backup filename. The floppy disk must not be write-protected.
