OK, looking at the links sent by Mark, I think I'll need some advice on which one to download, as there are about 5 of them. Clueless here.

With all today's activities, I don't have time to read the large manual today - probably not before Wednesday or Thursday. What I did read real quick was mostly Greek to me. It seems as if this program is for wiping unused parts of your drive to completely wipe deleted data. So if either of you can give me quick easy instructions for safely downloading it onto my husband's laptop, burning it to use on mine, and then getting it going in such a way as to completely wipe the drive, that would be spectacular.

Thanks!
S.

PS I'm a bit overwhelmed. Does anyone think that just reformatting using the OS disk might be an easier alternative? Is the reason for not doing that because a 'rootkit' might not be destroyed in such a process?

You want this one Download Bootable ISO Image of Active@ KillDisk to burn CD.

Just d\l`d it myself. Has all you will need once extracted. Even a little stand-alone iso burning program. Once you are in the extracted folder. Just double click on Iso-Burner.exe. The ISO path already points right to the file you want to burn. In step 2, Burner: It should automatically detect yours. Click BURN ISO!

When it is done it will let you know. Once we are sure the iso image works then everything can be deleted. Nothing to uninstall.

I am not real familiar with the user interface for KD. So going to have to hope Mark jumps back in here if you have questions.

Yes. As Mark said. We are concerned with a very deep seeded rootkit.

It's been a year since I ran it but it was pretty straightforward

Got the iso on the Cd and it has booted my computer to a blue screen with a software menu on the top left quadrant.

Yep, gonna need help with it. Which one to choose?

Active@ UNERASER
Active@ KILLDISK [FREE]
Active @ Partition Recovery
Active@ Password Changer
Active@ NTFS Reader [FREE]
Active@ Disk Image

It looks like KillDisk Free is the only option that erases stuff - the others recover - - SO, I'm gonna choose that one...

OK, now I'm gonna choose 'To erase all data on the selected device permantly press F10.
I cursored down from "Floppy Disk 0" to (80h Unallocated) because that looks like my drive 250 GB.
Pressing F10...
Took me to another menu, doggone it! It looks like options for the operation - - don't know if I need to change them - looks like you can put an
'x' next to them if you want.

Ok, guys - - don't know what to do here:
Erase Method One Pass Zeros (can't change this on the free version)
[] Verification: 0 %
Retry Attempts: 5
[] Ignore Errors
[x] Clear Log File before Start (this is greyed out so it can't change)
[] Skip confirmation

OK, gonna assume these are the defaults and I don't need to change anything. Pressing 'Go'...
Confirming action...
OK, it looks like it's going, it's at 0% with a progress bar, but the bar isn't moving yet.

Will wait to see what happens and get back to you when I can - - our guests just arrived, much later than expected.

It says Time Left: 02:20:57 The progress bar is now at 2%.

OK, will post back later.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!
S.

This one is QUICK! It now says:

F2 - Save log to file (default KILLDISK>LOG)
----------Erase Session--------------------------
Active@ KILLDISK started at : Mon Nov 2 15:50:39 2009
Target: Unallocated 250 GB
S/N:
Located on: (80h)
Erase Method: One pass zeros Passes:1
Time taken 01:33:42
Total number of erased devices, partitions: 1
Esc - Exit

SOOO - do you want me to exit? It looks as if it's DONE! HALLELUJAH!

Now, do I just put in the OS (Vista) disk from Dell and let it install? Or is there something else needing to be done before that?

I'M SOOOO HAPPY!
S.

PS On my way out for the fellowship dinner in about 15 minutes - - will check back around 11:00 p.m. to see if it's okay to put Vista in and let it do its thing. Oh, do you want me to have it save a log, would that be helpful?

Should not be any reason to save the log.

You should be all set to start a nice fresh install of Vista.

Here's what happened:

Wiped the drive with KillDisk - - it took only 1 1/2 hours.
Installed Vista.
Installed Drivers.
Installed Security Software.

Tomorrow evening, my husband is taking me to Dallas to buy Windows 7 - - our church took up the money tonight for us to get it. We talked to a local pc repair guy about 7 and he said he'd been using the Beta for about four months and he's VERY pleased with it - says its designed like Mac and that it's the most stable of all the Windows OS's.

So before I install my other software or customize Vista, will install the Windows 7 Upgrade. Know nothing about it, of course and will probably post in that forum for advice on customizing it.

Have any of you tried it and if so, do you like it?

One little thing has me a bit concerned: the computer has acted funny a couple of times while I've been installing tonight - - mouse jumping, browser minimizing - - the unit is so fast w/o all the software on it and I sure hope that these things are just because it's so snappy I don't realize I clicked the X button. No instances of WMC popping up, thank GOD!

On the last setup, I only had AVG and Broadcom in the startup and disabled all the other stuff. Is that okay? It makes the unit boot up a lot faster than with all that microsoft stuff in startup. It's all still accessible manually when I need it.

Do you know about upgrading to 7? If you have Vista customized, will that customization carry over to 7 or will it have to be customized separately? Like turning off the UAC, making it keep only a couple of restore points, etc. No point in doing it in Vista if it has to be redone in 7.

Ooops - - there it did it again. While I'm on my husband's computer writing to you, the browser open on my computer backed up to the previous webpage by itself. This is bad, isn't it? It went back to the home page when I had been looking at a search.

(Breaking down into gut-wrenching sobs.)

What do you think? HELP!

Oh, my goodness! Closed out the browser and saw that some of the icons on the desktop have turned into that windows default icon that looks like a page with a window with icons on the paper. Sob!

OK - wait a minute - - I decided to reboot to see if that made a difference and this message says: "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. installing update 22 of 93. SO, Vista has been downloading updates and sometimes that causes the computer to act funny, doesn't it - - I seem to remember that when I reinstalled Vista a couple months ago that when the updates all downloaded, the unit did behave a bit funny.

Maybe I feel better? Appreciate any input or advice.

Thanks for hanging out with me through all this craziness!
S.

P.S. Is there any thing else at all that we need to do before upgrading?

At this point I am at a bit of a lose. I know lap top touch pads can act a bit strange at times. But if it was setting by it self and was doing this then I am not sure what is going on.

A couple of questions. Are you connected by wireless? Have you set up a secure wireless connection using at least WPA, preferably WPA2.

It could have something to do with the MS updates. The forum, as well as another one I frequent as had multiple posts about a clunker update or two that has been causing problems on some systems. Though none of the problems fit your description.

The little I have played with Win7, personally, I feel it is an improvement over Vista.

Keep us posted how things are going.

Good morning,

I'm not sure what 'set up a secure wireless connection using at least WPA...' means. When we installed our router, I set it so that it requires a key to log onto it, is that what you mean, or is there some other security measure I should have taken when I set that up?

Our DSL connection here is ridiculous. At least 50% of the time, the connection is down and you can't get online at all. It goes off and on all through the day and more times than not, when you try to access the internet, it's unaccessible and you have to keep trying. Sometimes it's only off a few seconds and sometimes for hours. We've complained to Embarq about it, as have others in our neighborhood. They're in the area working on it every few months, but usually when we call and complain, they say something like, "You must have a faulty router." NO. The problem began when the service was installed, before we bought a router. Just to appease them, we replaced out new router with a second new router, then a few years later when we just didn't think we could put up with it anymore, we replaced the second one with a third new one just to prove to them it wasn't our router. Of course, there was no change in the service interruptions.

We've often wondered if the DSL itself was insecure - - we KNOW it's very unstable out here in the country. Before we started using AVG a couple of years ago, we used Norton, then Zone Alarm - - and although we just don't surf sites that are shady in any way, we were getting trojans, keyloggers, viruses, etc. several times a year. Since we started using AVG, we haven't gotten anything other than tracking cookies - - at least until the recent troubles with my computer. Is it possible this internet connection is insecure? If so, is there a way to secure it before I install 7?

Do you know how I can get my icons back? I tried properties and clicking on the icon (it says the icon is there on the desktop, but it isn't), but the icon still doesn't return.

Have a spectacular day!
S.

Sounds like you are fine then. As long as the key is not a word that can be found in the dictionary or a common name. It should be a minimum of 8 alpha\numeric characters in both upper and lower case. One other step would be to change the default password on the router.

Unfortunately that is the standard ISP company line when they are unable to hold up to their end of a service contract. Have even had instances where the first thing they do is tell a User to turn off their firewall. While this may be a temporary fix just to get the connection established I do not recommend it as a final, permanent solution.

There are so many variables today concerning the Internet and it`s security. Trusted sites can be cracked and exploited. Several years ago the Microsoft site was knocked off line by a DoS attack = Denial of Service attack. More recently a couple major AV sites were cracked and defaced. There are always cases of normally safe sites being penetrated and having exploits planted on their pages. These are then passed on to the unknowing users machines.

Many very popular sites are constantly targeted, Facebook & Twitter are examples. It is called social engineering.

Are the icons there, just showing as broken or do they not exist at all?

The icons show up as the generic windows icon. Googled it and tried a couple fixes but neither worked.

Seems that's the least of my problem, Z. A while ago, I went to my computer to check my email and the start menu was open with that same gibberish in the 'Start Search' line. A couple of minutes later, WMC opened by itself.

I'm in cyber twilight zone or something.

How can this possibly be - - after nuking the drive - - wasn't that supposed to destroy everything?

No one has yet requested to see a Hijack log for any of this problem - - might that help, do you think? I'm stumped and entirely frustrated.

After I loaded Vista, I installed the drivers for the audio/video/wireless and then installed AVG, SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyware, and Ccleaner - - no other software. Haven't even run any of the scans yet, either. I'm sure it wouldn't help.

SP1 hasn't downloaded yet, much less SP2 - - so I guess we know now that SP2 wasn't the problem.

This unit is 14 months old yesterday and there's no way I can afford to buy another computer or take this one to a repair shop - - I just purchased the upgrade subscriptions for AVG, MalwareBytes, Panda - - and had a pc repair guy look at it over the weekend and HE couldn't find anything wrong with it! But I still had to pay him, of course. So, I've already spent a couple hundred dollars on this problem. The church gave me $100 last night to upgrade to 7, but now I'm not sure whether I should do that or not.

Please tell me you know something else we can try - - and thanks once again for sticking in there with me.

Scratching my head......

Off the top of my head there are only a few things I can think of. As long as the programs you downloaded came only from trusted sites.

AVG
Spywareblaster
SUPERAntiSpyware
CCleaner

Or sites directly linked from the above.

You mention Panda. You are running 2 AVs?

When WMC pops up. Is it asking to install....or.....?
