Good morning,
I'm not sure what 'set up a secure wireless connection using at least WPA...' means. When we installed our router, I set it so that it requires a key to log onto it, is that what you mean, or is there some other security measure I should have taken when I set that up?
Sounds like you are fine then. As long as the key is not a word that can be found in the dictionary or a common name. It should be a minimum of 8 alpha\numeric characters in both upper and lower case. One other step would be to change the default password on the router.

Our DSL connection here is ridiculous. At least 50% of the time, the connection is down and you can't get online at all. It goes off and on all through the day and more times than not, when you try to access the internet, it's unaccessible and you have to keep trying. Sometimes it's only off a few seconds and sometimes for hours. We've complained to Embarq about it, as have others in our neighborhood. They're in the area working on it every few months, but usually when we call and complain, they say something like, "You must have a faulty router." NO. The problem began when the service was installed, before we bought a router. Just to appease them, we replaced out new router with a second new router, then a few years later when we just didn't think we could put up with it anymore, we replaced the second one with a third new one just to prove to them it wasn't our router. Of course, there was no change in the service interruptions.
Unfortunately that is the standard ISP
company line when they are unable to hold up to their end of a service contract. Have even had instances where the first thing they do is tell a User to turn off their firewall. While this may be a temporary fix just to get the connection established I do not recommend it as a final, permanent solution.

We've often wondered if the DSL itself was insecure - - we KNOW it's very unstable out here in the country. Before we started using AVG a couple of years ago, we used Norton, then Zone Alarm - - and although we just don't surf sites that are shady in any way, we were getting trojans, keyloggers, viruses, etc. several times a year. Since we started using AVG, we haven't gotten anything other than tracking cookies - - at least until the recent troubles with my computer. Is it possible this internet connection is insecure? If so, is there a way to secure it before I install 7?
There are so many variables today concerning the Internet and it`s security. Trusted sites can be cracked and exploited. Several years ago the Microsoft site was knocked off line by a DoS attack = Denial of Service attack. More recently a couple major AV sites were cracked and defaced. There are always cases of normally
safe sites being penetrated and having exploits planted on their pages. These are then passed on to the unknowing users machines.
Many very popular sites are constantly targeted, Facebook & Twitter are examples. It is called social engineering.

Do you know how I can get my icons back? I tried properties and clicking on the icon (it says the icon is there on the desktop, but it isn't), but the icon still doesn't return.
Have a spectacular day!
S.
Are the icons there, just showing as broken or do they not exist at all?
