Other problems I had after google earth/spyware doctor download:
My windows task manager stopped functioning. I had been using it to close pop-up windows and to help with freezing problems on my default e-mail and browser programs that weren't working properly.
Also, i got a message 4 times in 12 hours: "dll cannot run as app."
Either google earth and spyware doctor were very poorly designed, or the infections were somehow imported with or activated by the new applications. I had been having very little trouble until those were downloaded, and I probably would not have had them had I chosen not to download google toolbar for IE7, which I use very rarely.
As to having to pay to cure "problems" found by a free program: remember the scam pc cleaners and registry cleaners that were circulating during the malware olympics, some of which were advertising on legitimate sites? You would do the scan after reading the information, then find your computer locked up. the program would give the message, "this was only a partial demonstration. To get the full benefit of the program, you can purchase it at such and such a site."
Microsoft has long been known for unfair business practices, and recently lost an antitrust case in the EU. Yay! the EU did something right! I do not know whether this spyware doctor version that people have been encountering is the legitimate one, but if it is, those of you who like spyware doctor should go to Secunia and some of the freeware and free computer security sites to read their stated philosophy:
it is important to keep the internet as safe as possible for everyone, so that it might keep functioning at all.
