FILE RECOVERY Data accedently deleted from falshdirve!

Hi everyone,

My mother deleted very important files from her flash drive he other night. Files include word files and pictures. I told her I would look into the various file recovery programs out there, and low and behond their are more than I expected (of course).

To the chase: I need to know if anyone has ever used a program called "File Recover"?

I need to know if it works.

If not I need more suggestions, or helpfull tips on recovering the data.

She has winXP and NTFS file system.

I've never used that one. But I highly recommend Recuva.

Hitsquad had one specifically for thumb drives
You might want to look in the freeware apps. section and see if he listed it there

You also have to remember that some are better than others for the type of files you want to recover
Images can be a pain without corrupting the file

Alright, I downloaded Recuva, and it worked. However, there is a problem: When I recover a word document, I open it up and the text is all in juibberish code. Bunch of symbols and characters that make no sense. I know it is probably because the file was corrupted maybe but the program had a big green button next to it, indicating it was in good condition.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

It sounds like it is being opened with notepad instead of word. Right click on the file > open with > Word. You may have to browse for it.

When I open it, a window pops up. Its a file convertion thing with Word. You tell it to open up with "Western european" and it throws a bunch of weird characters at you.

What is the extension listed on the file. When you write click and go to properties what does it say it is and what does it say it opens with?

Type of file: Microsoft word document
Opens with: Microsoft office word.

Just trying to me clear in my own mind.

Do not do much work with Word, little on recovering .docs

Only two things that come to mind are that Western European is not what was used. Or, are you perhaps using a different version of Office\Word to try to open them with. I believe the file type was changed in Office 07 from previous versions.

Im not sure, i will have to ask my mom about it. She is a school teacher so she might have done it on a computer at school, then copied the info to her flashdrive.

Ill check with her.

If that is the case then we can still probably make them usable\viewable. MS has an add-on\patch that bridges the gap so to speak so .docs created in the newer Word can be worked with in older vers.

Let me know what you find out and we can dig up the d\l link on the MS site.

I've used Recuva before, and it worked well enough. Advanced File Recovery arguably works the best and it costs about $40. But you can download its trial for free. And you can work directly with different media types: hard drives, memory sticks, digital camera memory cards, and others.

I've had a similar problem with a corrupted word document not too long ago. The solution was relatively simple (not saying that it is the same in your case).

But try changing it from .doc to .docx, or visa verca.
