How to use Smilies?.

Maybe it's a stupid question but on some forums I visit I can drag and drop a smilie/emoticon onto my post and it appears as an image of whatever smilie I chose. However on other forums including this one, when I drag and drop one of the available smilies it doesn't appear as an image but text ie, java script:void(0); Can someone explain what I have to do to get the image to appear on this type of forum?.
