2) I've seen instructions to run ComboFix with switches. Is there a list of switches? (running /? doesn't help)
I understand it is not meant to be used without training; thus am asking if there is any way to self-train? Any detailed explanation of what the program is actually doing?

Your best bet is probably to sign up here or another malware removal forum as a Malware Removal Trainee.
Have thought about it myself. Understand there is quit a waiting list.

Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.
The only public information that is available can be found at this guide:
How to use ComboFix
Guess that answers that..

The use of ComboFix is limited to that forum for a purpose. It makes sure that you have a trained tech assisting you with its use - that is the recommendation of the author.
Please follow this guide from step (6). Post a DDS log to the HJT forum and a Team member will be along to help you as soon as possible.

Go through forums like this one (malwarebytes.org, whatthetech.com,malwareremoval.com etc) and in few months you'll get the basics.

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around
