Just thoght I'd give you an update since things worked out.
I hooked up my disc to the other computer and backed up all necessary files. I then put it back in the other machine. Before I formatted and reinstalled window I gave System Recovery another try. Hitting f10 at start up and entering into Hp system Recovery. For some reason this time it worked. I received a couple of error message having to do with a file in pchealth but I entered past them. This happpened before but usually several hundred files woud give me problems and I would cancel before it finished. The process completed and the recovery process continued. An hour later after resetting a few settings and a few updates I was up and running. IDon't know which of the repairs we used allowed recovery to work correctly but I figured this might be useful info for you. Thank Again

I had the same thing to start with when I picked up a virus.
There is a Memdump.log file in windows that takes a dump of the memory every time it gets a 'shut down' error.
This unfortunately contains the reboot sequence on startup so that you never get past the welcome screen as windows reads the memdump file and reboots again
The solution I used was to put the disc on another machine as a slave and delete the memdump file. After that I could boot up no bother.
