Planning a major upgrade

This is what I currently have:
OS: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty
CPU: AMD Athlon II 240 2.8GHz
Motherboard: ASRock K10N78M
RAM: OCZ 4GB DDR2
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM
Integrated NVidia Geforce 8100
Integrated audio
Power Supply: A-Top ATP-AP700SC 700W
Case: GIGABYTE GZ-X5BPD-500

This is what I'm planning to add:
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB
Scythe Fan Controller
Silverstone AEROSLOTS
SAMSUNG 500GB 7200 RPM SATA Internal Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Scythe Kama Bay Plus HDD Cooler - Black (SCKB-2000 BK)
ASUS Xonar D1 sound card

It's important that I have a single-slot video card because I have a MicroATX motherboard. Is there a better single-slot solution?
Will everything work properly with the existing parts?

Hmm...why are you buying the OEM version of Win 7, rather than an upgrade version?

I ask only because the upgrade 3-pack averages out to $56 per license. And, from what I read, anyone using the upgrade versions must clean install and there is no check for prior O/S as occurred with XP.

I believe the upgrade requires that you have a previous version of Windows installed. It may not check for an OS, but I believe it's in the terms of use.

"Actually...Following the trend of MS upgrades from Win95 and on... NO. You do not need to install Vista, XP, Win 2000 etc before doing a clean install of Win 7. All it will require you to do is verify you have a previous version of a OS.

Example: You have a clean hard drive and were previously running Win"x" If you boot to the Win 7 upgrade DVD, it will start the process, then prompt you to insert your previous version Windows disc. Once it spins up and verifies it, it will simply ask you to pop out the old disk, and re-insert your Win 7 upgrade disc and continue installing the actual full version.

So in actuallity its a full version on the upgrade, it just makes sure you already had a copy of windows before. And history will prove that upgrading from one OS to another NEVER works flawlessly. I will always do a clean and fresh install."

Since you seem to not possess a Windows CD that qualifies for the upgrade, you are correct in your approach.

I haven't seen many single slotted performance GPU's, mainly the GeForce 9 series and the Radeon HD 4670. I have heard of cooling issues with the 9800GT, but they may have redone the card to make it cooler. You can use the upgrade edition to do a clean install, but you have to do some tinkering first. Here's a site that explains it. I would also suggest getting a HDD with a 32MB cache, like the Western Digital Caviar Green WD5000AADS 500GB 32MB Cache. I have two Xonar sound cards, the higher-end D2 and the D2X, and I like them very much. However, with Windows 7, the drivers are not included with the OS so you have to download them from the Asus website.

GPU heat is not a problem for me. I have an expansion slot VGA fan already. This is it:

The problem is not the heat generated by the card, it's how hot the card runs.

Would the 9600GSO be a better choice?
I want to be able to play Crysis on at least Medium at 1920*1080 with no antialiasing.

I think I've also decided on wiping Ubuntu off my hard drive when I install windows 7. It's a good OS, but I only installed it because I didn't want to pay for Windows at the time. This opens me up to ATI cards. What is a good single-slot ATI video card?

Edit: I just found what is probably the best single-slot ATI card:

You could always try something in the Radeon 5xxx series, though, a 5870 would bottleneck with a dual core and it is dual slotted. Between those two cards, the 4850 would win. Most of the 4850's are dual slotted so make sure you have a well ventilated case if you get one.
