An error occured during directory enumeration.

Ahh, ok then. Looks like there's still damage to the hard drive.

Do chkdsk c: /r again (and again if still not doing a directory listing)

OK, I get to the recovery console, it loads up and says Microsoft Windows XP™ recovery console

@ SeftonCR: The clue is here .... in Recovery Console the prompt should read C:\WINDOWS>
The fact that it only reads C:\> indicates a problem with directory enumeration.

It may be prudent at this time to download a diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website, and run it on the problematic machine (boot to the CD or floppy that you prepare). This would confirm (or otherwise) that the hard drive is not failing. If the hard drive is shown to be in perfect condition with NO problems at all, then it would be safe to proceed with work to access/repair the Windows file system.

Edit: I just noticed that you are using a DELL .... in that case running the Dell diagnostics from the Boot Menu/BIOS Setup Menu should be sufficient for this.

Thanks for all these !!!

I actually found a spare HD, and reformatted it, then tries the other two to boot from it. It seems I cleared and repaired the one with my files on !!!!!!!!!!! Is there anyway of getting them back?

Cheers
