Hi,
I have a Microsoft USB mouse (listed as "Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse Optical" in the Device Manager) that was working fine up until a couple of months ago. Now it randomly disconnects itself - sometimes it reconnects seconds later but sometimes it takes longer. Usually just flipping the mouse upside down or keeping it still seems to fix the problem but sometimes the mouse remains unresponsive so I have to manually unplug and plug-in the mouse. I don't think it's a problem with the USB port because I've used two different ports and the problem remained. Also, I've used a flash drive on those ports and it worked without cutting out. I'm using XP Service Pack 3. Is this problem fixable or should I get a new mouse?

If the problem is not from your computer USB ports, then it is for sure the mouse itself.
When it disconnects, try to bend the wire and see if it reconnects, if it does, it is from the wire.
If it doesnt, dissemble the mouse, there is a small round sticker on top of the screw. See if there is any loose components.
If you can get your hands on another PC, get your mouse and try it on it and check if it works well.
If nothing solves the problem, then the last thing is to buy a new one.
