Also have a look in `Device Manager` under `Network Adapters` and see do you have any conflicts, i.e yellow triangles or ? marks.
It may be that you have to reinstall your ethernet driver, usually `Realtech`. You may have to download it and transfer it onto your mates pc using a pen drive or such like.

going by what the op says about the 2 screens in the notification area,,,, he has a connection to his router,,, ie,, 2 screens with the little blue globe in,,, otherwise it would have a red X through it or a yellow triangle with limited connection,,,, a ping test will establish then if its his browsers,,, or the hardware,,, ie cables,,, network card,,, filters or his isp
"yeh i did that mate and it connects to my router ok and the signal is excellent but when i try to open a web page its "page cannot be displayed"
this is in one of the op's posts,,,, so he does have a connection to the router
so sending a ping will tell us if all the hardware is ok,,, then if the op phones his isp and asks them to check his line this will also give us more info,,,, then i would consider checking the browsers,,, ie,,, uninstall with revo then redownload or downloading another browser to see if works,,,, also i would check if he can still receive emails through his isp's email account (not an internet based email like gmail etc as these use browsers),,,,,,,,,,,
so,,, the ping test is valid ;)

hi,,,, i do think you could be on the right track,,, with the flushing of the browsers with ccleaner,,,,,,,, and if it pings fine then he still has an out going internet connection,,, then i would also recommend that the op's first step is also recommended by you,,, he needs to download mbam installer to a flash drive,,, install it and run it, even though it will be slightly out of date on the virus definitions,,, it still give some piece of mind.

I dont know Vista but i am using `Windows 7` which i am led to believe is similar so you could open the network centre and click `show full map` which should help you pinpoint exactly where its breaking down and importantly which side of the router.
