Auto disconnect in ie8

I have just updated from IE 6 to IE 8 and find that the auto disconnect feature seems to not be working. I have checked in connections and found that the option to disconnect after a period of inactivity is no longer there but the "disconnect when connection may no longer be needed" box is ticked. When I exit IE the computer stays connected where before I got a dialogue box counting down to disconnection.

Note: XP SP3

Any suggestions on how to restore this function?
