Hopefully this is the right forum, but I'm only about 60% sure. haha

What is a good wiki that I can use for personal use? I want to store it on my computer, which is a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6, and not on the internet.

I used to use Moinmoin on my old computer, but didn't like the interface that much and the markup (right word?) was a bit tough and also limited compared to, say MediaWiki.

Ideally, I would like Mediawiki, but my research appears to indicate that it is a bit complex to install.

If you were looking to install MediaWiki on your local PC, i would suggest looking at a package called XAMPP (it has apache, php and mysql in it which are needed to install MediaWiki).

Needless to say, you are going to need a webserver service, php and some sort of database (*sql) running on your computer to host the site as it is written in PHP.

If you need help installing XAMPP or MediaWiki, feel free to post back

Well if that's relatively easy to set up. Otherwise anything that functions well.

I suppose we could give it a shot.

Well i have never had any problems in setting it up.
Heres a LINK to the download.

Basically choose a destination for where your website will sit on your HDD and follow the prompts, i'd install apache and mysql as services, don't worry about the ftp or mail server.

You may have to add an exception in your firewall for apache (the web server).

If you don't end up using wikimedia, you will still need a similar set up for any other php based program.

Alright downloaded and have no idea what to do. Haha.
Remember that I'm using a Mac, so it may be a bit different.

Or you could try LionWiki which doesn't need a database, just PHP, and can be (with somewhat fewer bells and whistles) run from a single PHP file.

Whew... I wish you luck! I tried MediaWiki about two months ago, complicated magic going on in that one.

First of all use PhpMyAdmin to create a database, from memory you should find this via http://localhost/phpmyadmin.

Call the database mediawiki or something easy to remember.

Now follow the instructions found here.

Feel free to post back with any problems you run into.

Perhaps it's a bit late, but I just found this: WikiOnAStick

Runs entirely from a single self modifying XHTML file
