Compaq Presario won't boot and makes clicking sound

My compaq presario sr1720nx (It's a slightly different model, but am at another location right now and don't have it) won't boot. There is power, and it makes kind of a revving sound up and down. Also there is a clicking sound intermittantly but i can't isolate it's location.

Is it likely that the hard drive died? I've had the computer for about 3½ years. If it is the hard drive, can I somehow retrieve the data?

HELP PLEASE!!!

Hard drives do sometimes make a clicking noise [click of death] when getting ready to go belly-up
