If it is one plug, the headset wasn't designed for a computer. Headset/Mic's for computers need to have two plugs as the Mic is a separate jack on the computer. Most of the HD Audio's also have a utility to let you choose what you are using the jack for and you would need to set that to use your Mic.

Hello,

I also need help with using microphone with my Dell laptop, Vista, SP 2. It worked fine prior to the SP installation. Example, I could use speech recognition with my computer. Now I've tried for hours and read all the support topics I can find. Using my webcam with in-built mic, the other party can not hear me. So I bought a separate headset. Still, I can't be heard.

My speakers test OK. I'm plugging my headset mic (or my webcam mic) into the mic port on the side of my Dell. My sound levels are all set at highest possible.

Here's my diagnostics results. Any clues here?

My problem turned out to be a motherboard issue. Dell is sending a new one.
