I'd Like To Know DELL OS Installation

I have a another friend who has a Dell Laptop, and I happen to have a Dell OS
Reinstallation CD MS WXP Sp1

He tried it and said that it could not be done because it asked for password and a number probably the product key, . . .

I just successfully reinstalled a Dell Desk Top and got none of that,

So is it different with different PC's or was it because I deleted C: Drive ?
