Last week, I was surfing the internet and listening to online music as usual. Suddenly, my laptop shut itself down and automatically rebooted itself. I'm unable to access Windows because it keep on rebooting. I tried to reboot it into safe mode, here are the options when I press F8.

Every option I've chosen, I got this page;

"Please select the operating system to start :

And when I selected "Microsoft XP Home Edition", it started to reboot itself again.....and again.

Then I tried F8 again, this time I chose "Disable automatic restart on system failure". Then I see this message;

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps :

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.

I have no newly installed hardware or software. I really have no idea how this problems occurred. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have so many important files saved into drive C. Please help, and thank you in advance.

I would try the Recovery Console option, if Last Known Good Configuration yields nothing positive.

If the RC option works, type 1 when asked which install. Just hit Enter when a password is requested.

On the next line awaiting input from you...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.

After that, I've tried typing "exit". But when I reboot my laptop, I still get the blue screen error and it keep on rebooting itself. What to do now? Thank you

Go back into the Recovery Console...and this time type fixmbr as the command you want executed. a warning may come up expressing that your MBR is not standard, etc...ignore that and elect to run the command.

You might take a look at the data for 0A errors (left side, 2d item in column) posted at http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.htm.

The STOP errors are listed by the last two letters of the key code within the message. In your case, 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL equals 0A.

I still got the blue screen and the system keeps on rebooting.

From what I see, this error happens often enough in laptops. But I don't see anything definitive that explains it.

I'd lean toward hardware, just because it's easy to eliminate some aspects of it.

Hard drive and RAM can be tested, ditto for PSU.

If you have recovery/restore CDs, you might try those.

Reinstallation? Well, it sounds like a hard work for me. I'm not an expert and I'm afraid to try. After reinstallation, will I be able to access files that I have in drive C? I'm not sure if I have the recovery/restore CD. I'll look for it when I get home. My friend has a Dell laptop and a Reinstallation CD - Microsoft Windows XP Home. It stated that "Only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer. This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers." I see that it clearly stated that the CD is for Dell computer only. But should I try it anyway?

No.

I'm the kind of person who believes what I read...when it's on a product produced by a respectable entity.

Recovery/restore CDs are not the equivalent of any Genuine Microsoft XP CD. They serve the same general purpose...provide a means to arrive at a system with a functional O/S...but the manufacturers of those systems tailor those CDs to fit their own way of doing business and installing the O/S.

Dell doesn't consult any other system maker when it puts its CDs into production, nor do any of the others employing such (Gateway, eMachines, HP, etc.).
