Hello everyone. I am working on a computer for my mother. She was using WinXP and it was all messed up and would not boot anymore. There was a power failure and the computer has not booted sense. It booted from the Ubuntu livecd just fine. I do not have a legal copy of WinXP to put back on it so I thought I would install Ubuntu Linux. I knew that Ubuntu had a file migration wizard in it, but it did not work. I installed Ubuntu from the GUI. I chose to use the entire 40GB hard drive, thus removing WinXP and having the entire drive be a linux only install. The drive partitioned, formatted, and the install was done. Now, I do not have any of the files from WinXP that I wanted to transfer such as My Documents, My Pictures, etc. What do I do now? Did I lose the data and files? Why did the migration assistant not work? Thanks for the help.

hey s1mp13m4n

I am really sorry to tell you this...but yes it is gone.
The migration assistant that you are referring to only works if you use a side-by-side install. You should have first backed up the data to an external drive, then done the re-install.
While some data may still be on the drive, I don't believe you will be able to recover much probably nothing at all.
In the future, make sure you choose the side-by-side install to import the Windows Data.
PB

OK thank you very much. I was thinking that, however I will try a last effort on data recovery. I have done this in the past and was able to get the data back. That is all I can do. :flowers: Thanks for the help.
